Directory: 1881 Slater's Directory of Swineford with Bellaghy & Foxford *********************************************** Ireland Genealogy Projects Archives Mayo Index Copyright ************************************************ File contributed by: Cathy Labath 1881 SLATER'S DIRECTORY OF SWINEFORD WITH BELLAGHY & FOXFORD SWINEFORD With BELLAGHY and FOXFORD SWINEFORD, or Swinford, is a market and post town, in the parish of Kilconduff, barony of Galen and county of Mayo, 140 miles N.W. of Dublin, 15 N.E. of Castlebar, 17 N. of Clare, and 15 S.S.E. of Ballina, seated on elevatged ground, and derives its name from a fordable stream which passes by the town and near which was formerly held a considerable market for swine. The place enjoys at the present day little importance from its trading transactions, and none from its architectural embellishments. The court house is a good and convenient building; therein petty sessions are held on every second Friday and general sessions in January, April, July and October. The Protestant Epicopal church of St. Mary's is a small Gothic building, with a tower, erected in 1810, and subsequently repaired by means of funds granted by the late ecclesiastical commissioners. The living is a vicarage, and includes the united parishes of KILCONDUFF, MEELICK, and KILBEAGH. The Roman Catholic church in appearance is unostentatious, but is a convenient structure. There is also a convent. A union workhouse, erected in 1811, a National school for children of both sexes, barracks for the constabulary and a branch of the Hibernian Bank are the only public establishments. The market is held on Tuesday for pigs, provisions, corn &c. Fairs: Febrary 1st, March 17th, May 20th, July 2nd, August 18th, October 31st, and December 18th. Population of the town in 1861, 1,392 and in 1871, 1,366. FOXFORD is a small but ancient market and post town, in the parish of TOOMORE, barony of Gallen, county of Mayo, 1571/2 miles N.W. from Dublin, and about 7 miles W. by N. from Swineford, and is a station on the Midland Great Western railway. It was formerly a place of some trade, but has of late years gone very much to decay. The river Moy, which runs through the town, is crossed by a handsome stone bridge. There are places of worship for Protestants and Roman Catholics, and the latter body have in course of construction a new church, in the Gothic style of architecture, estimated to cost about £5,000. There are two National schools. The market is held on Monday. Fair: May 15th, June 25th, October 3rd, and December 16th. Population in 1861, 562 and in 1871, 667.
