MCNALLY (NEE MCDONNELL), MARY ANNE JUNE 19, 1956

Source: National Geographic Magazine
Name: Mary Anne McNally (nee McDonnell)

Mary Anne, the last survivor of the awful famine, was my
great grandmother. All 12 of her children moved to
Massachussets, though two returned to live in their native
County Mayo. In her life she witnessed and lived through 108
years of turmoil and grinding poverty.
At the age of 103 she was interviewed by National Geographic
and this photo, 3 years before her untimely death, was taken
at that time. She hold a rosary, was a fluent speaker of
Irish and is, historically, quite iconic. The last famine
child. One of her sons, Patrick, born 1876 died in
Framingham, Massachusetts, aged 104. His sister, Bridget
(Leyden) survived to 95. Others had similar longevity.
