Captain Jordan, Popular West Shore Pilot, Dies Suddenly

He had been a sufferer from Asthma, and this weakened his
heart - ten days ago he was forced to quit work.

Captain Patrick Jordan, one of the oldest and best known
pilots in the employment of the West Shore ferry, died
suddenly yesterday morning at his home, 414 Morgan street,
Union Hill. While he had not enjoyed good health for some
time his condition was not thought to be serious and the
news of his death proved something of a shock to his
numerous friends. Monday night he experienced great
difficulty in breathing. At 7 am. his daughter Agnes found
him dead in bed. He must have passed away quietly in his
sleep sometime between 5 and 7 am.

Mr. Jordan was 59 years old. He was born in County Monahan,
Ireland. He came to this country when only 15 years old. A
few years after his arrival he enlisted in the United States
Navy, serving in all 8 years.

His naval experience gave him a fondness for the water and
thirty years ago he entered the employ of the West Shore
ferry as a deck hand. His good work won him promotion and
ten years later he was made a pilot and placed in charge of
one of the company's boats He was a captain for twenty
years and was one of the best known and most popular boatmen
on the Hudson.

The deceased is survived by three children, the Misses Agnes
and Ruth and Frank Jordan. His wife died suddenly just two
years ago.

He was a member of the American Association of Master Mates
and Pilots; Gen. Joseph A. Wheeler Garrison , Army and Navy
Union, Eagle Lodge, K. and L. of H. and the Holy Name
Society of St. Augustine's church.

The funeral will take place Friday at 10 a. am. from St.
Augustine's Church where a solemn mass of requiem for the
happy repose of his soul will be said by the Rev. Robt. J.
Byer. The burial will be in Holy Name cemetery where his
body will be laid beside that of his wife.

Additional Comments:
He was born in Coolskeagh, the son of John Jordan and Ann
Moan. He was believed to be one of a set of twins. He also
had a younger brother James who was born in 1865.
