KILCRUTTIN CEMETERY, TULLAMORE, COUNTY OFFALY (KINGS), IRELAND

'This burial-ground lies near the railway station on the
outskirts of the town of Tullamore; it is closed against
further interments. There is no trace of any building in
it; it was used by all religions. In the south-east corner
lies the tomb-slab of a priest; the inscription, which
faces the west, reads' :-

Pray for the soul of the
Reverd Mr JAMES GURAGHTY
Who depd this life April
ye 4th 1798 aged 96 years.

On a handsomely carved limestone column, standing about the
middle of the burial-ground, are cut the following two
inscriptions, on either side of it, on in English and the
other in German (small Roman type)':-

Sacred
to the memory
of
FREDK WILLM Baron OLDERSHAUSEN
late a Captain in his Majesty's
1st German Dragoons. Born the
15th of March 1776 at Verden in the
Electorate of Hanover and departed
this life at Tullamore
the 22nd of Decembr
1808
By his Brother officers.

'On the other oval panel':-
Des Gatten Vaters Freundes Bande
Sind fruh Gelost un freinden Lande
Schlafst Du den ernsten Todesschlasf
Dies Monument spricht Keine Luge
Der Wahrheit Griffel grub die Zuge
Du warst Treu Edel Biedere Bray

'The Baron Oldershausen was killed with many others in 1808
during a military riot in Tullamore, which took place between a
German Legion quartered there and some Irish Militia regiments,
an account of which is given in Cooke's "History of Birr."'

'On a box-tomb':-
Sacred to the Memory of WILLIAM | FULTON, Esqr.
late Lieutenant in | the 6th or Inneskilling Regiment |
of Dragoons. Born at Lisburn and | Departed this life |
the 17th day of | June 1813 Aged 41 years. | This
Stone was Erected by his Truly affectionate widow.

'On a flat slab':-
Sacred to the Memory of Lieut | JAMES GRANT of the
96th Regt | who died on the 19th of July 1816 | in the
27th year of his age.

'On a flat slab lying on the slope at the east side of the burial-
ground in the following inscription faintly cut':-
The body of the Revd IOHN MILLAR | is laid beneath this
stone | rescued from the Vale of Misery | at the age of
35 years | His conversation among his Parish | ioners
was such as to ensure their | regret at his departure
henc [sic], but their | grief returned unto their bosoms |
for his hope was full of Immortality.

'The clergyman many have been a Wesleyan minister, as other
members of that persuasion are buried close by. There is no date
on the slab, which belongs to the early nineteenth century.'

'On a flat slab over a vault at the north-east end':-
Sacred to the memory of the | Revd JAMES STIRLING
Wesleyan minister | who after a long and painful
illness | which he born with resignation | to the devine [sic]
will | pacefully [sic] finished his course on | Feby 3rd
1934 (?1854) aged 58 (or 38) years. | Blessed are the
dead who died in | the Lord.

'On a box-tomb is an inscription to the memory of JAMES
McKEE, "who for nearly 30 years faithfully laboured as an
Iterant Minister in the Wesleyan Methodist Society," in
Tullamore, and died on the 22nd April, 1805, aged 58.
'On another box-tomb there is an inscription to the memory of
the Rev. JOHN HODDEN, for twelve years Wesleyan Minister in
Tullamore, who died on the 11th December, 1812; aged 61.'

'On a headstone near the German officer's column':-
IHS
This stone is erected
By IAMES TEERNEN in Memy
of His Mother and his Be-
loved wife MARY TEENAN
alias BROPHY who Departed
this Life December The 5th
1775 Aged 32 years
Pray for the Souls of the
Faithful Departed.
