Hunt and Anne Phelan KILBARRYMEADEN CHURCH YARD (From Mrs S.de.C O'Grady.) This churchyard is terribly overgrown and the only old transcriptions I could find were On a vault Here lies the bodies of Richard Power Esq.of Gardenmorris who departed this life 27th September 1776 aged sixty three years Mary Power, his wife who departed this life May 1777 Aged sixty four years. Arnold Power ------------------ In the ruins of the old church are the following Erected by Nicholas Power of Ballybricken. Here lies the body of his Father Edmund Power son of Jeffrey Power of Benvoy who departed this life May 2nd 1750 Aged 49 years Also three of said Nicholas's children who died young . ------------------ Pray for the soul of the Reverend Father Michael Kearney who departed this life the 13th day of February 1760 in the 54th year of his age. Requiescat in Pace.Amen. Hic iacet Nicholas Power of Georgestowne Generosus et uxor Eus Giles Power que obiit dom 1602 Coat-of-Arms,Power impaling O'Shee motto per crucem ad coronam Here lieth the body of Rose Shee daughter to Shee of Sheestown yed ry the 28th' Departed this 1711 The above-named Rose may have been the daughter of Richard O'Shee of Sheestown, Co Kilkenny who married Rose daughter and heir of Peter Rothe [see Burkes Landed Gentry under O'Shee] As shown in the rubbing of the Coats-of-Arms; the dexter coat is very puzzling; but the motto "Per crucem ad coronam" gives a clue as it is the motto of the Power Family Mr G Burtchaell,Athlone, Pursuivant of Arms considers that the quartered coat in the dexter half of the shield is a mixture of arms of 2 Branches of the Power family. The original arms of this family is "Argent a chief indented sable," one branch of the family added three lions rampant on to the "chief " and another branch added three escallop shellson to the "chief"; on the rubbing the lions and escallop shells alone are shown ,quartered, forming a very peculiar and incorrect representation of the Power arms. The cross in the middle of them is inexplicable. The O'Shee arms are "Per bend indented azure and or,two fleurs-de-lis counterchanged .
