In 1852 he escaped to the United States, ending up in New York where he studied law. At the commencement of the American Civil War he joined the US Army. Following the Civil War he served as acting governor of the Montana Territory. In 1867 he drowned in the Missouri River after falling from a steamboat. His parents were THOMAS and ALICIA MEAGHER.
