(Continued from page 232, vol. ii.) _______ Sacred to the memory of Caroline Smith the beloved wife of Lieutenant Colonel John Charles Smith Assistant Adjutant General of the Western District. She departed this life on the 21st March 1839 aged 46 years after a short illness contracted in an unremitting attendance on the sick bed of a beloved child. She was a sincere friend and discharged the duties of Wife and Mother with exemplary affection, and died universally regretted by a large circle of friends, and deeply lamented by here family by whom she was singularly loved. Also to the memory of Robert Grant their youngest son, who survived his mother but a few days, and died on the 1st April 1839 aged 15 years. Having been sustained during a protracted illness by a steadfast faith in that Saviour whom he loved. Also to the memory of their only daughter Mary Uliana Caroline who died on the 17th March 1823 aged 9 years. This monument is erected in testimonial of the peculiar tenderness by which they were regarded by their alllicted Husband and Father. _______ To the memory of Richard Hancock Baron Castlemaine. This monument is erected by the grateful affection of his family. To whom he discharged all the duties of husband father and friend with the fidelity and affection of a Christian. He was removed from this Earthly scene on the 18th April 1840 by a lingering illness which he bore with Christian patience, and resigned his spirit into the hands of his Creator with the most unshaken reliance on the finished work of Jesus for pardon and acceptaince with God. He was deeply lamented by his family and universally regretted by his friends. AEtatis 72. _______ To the cherished memory of Robert Hancock Temple of Waterstown Esq. who departed this life 10 March 1843 in the 66 year of his age. Also to that of Louisa his beloved wife who died in London 2nd December 1839 in the 54 year of her age. This poor tribute of affection is dedicated by their only child Isabella, Baroness Harris, A.D. 1844. _________ Near this place lie interred the remains of Granville Heywood Eliot Esq. only son of Colonel Eliot K.H. of Valebrook Lodge in the County of Sussex, and a Captain in the 4th Royal Regiment of Dragoon Guards. He was unfortunately drowned in the Shannon near Long Island by the upsetting of his boat on the evening of the 19th of August 1844 in the 29th year of his age. His brother officrs, anxious to testify their deep regret for his untimely fate, and the loss of a valued companion and much esteemed friend, have caused this tablet to be erected to his memory. Tomb in churchyard to same. _______ In the family vault are deposited the remains of George Longworth Esq. of Glynwood who departed this life Sept. 21st 1847 aged 36 years. His unpretending liberality considerate kindness and affectionate disposition endeared him to his numberous friends. To commemorate such estimable qualities this tablet is erected by his fondly attached and deeply sorrowing brother. _______ In the family vault are deposted the remains of Francis Longworth Esq. of Glynwood and of Cotswold Gloucestershire 2nd son of Francis Longworth Esq. of Cregan who died A.D. 1804 aged 80 years. He departed this life the 8th Sept. 1849 in the 90th year of his age. Also Anne his wife who died 3rd Octbr 1852. _______ Sacred to the memory of Henry Norwood Trye Esq. late of Leckhampton Court, Gloucestershire, who died at Creggan House near this town, the seat of his brother-in-law Francis Longworth Esq., on the 15th November 1854 aged 56 years. He was respected as an intelligenet and active magistrate, and was a kind and affectionate, a sincere friend and a truly consistent Christian. This tablet is erected by his sorrowing widow, as a slight memorial of her irreparable loss, and of her value for the love and memory of one to whom she was happily united for many years. The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord. Job, chap. L., verse 21. _______ Sacred to the memory of the Honble. Henry Robert Handcock Late Lieut. Colonel commanding the 97th Regiment. He fell gloriously in the cause of his Sovereign and Country while gallantly leading the storming party of his regiment in the memorable attack upon the Redan of Savastopol on the 8th September 1855, in the 49th year of his age.His sorrowing brothers have erected this monument as a tribute of affection, and to record their heavy bereavement. Their greatest consolation is the well founded hoe that he whom they now lament will be found among the dead in Christ, and when the last trumpet shall sound he shall arise so life immortal to be ever with the Lord. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord. - Rev. xiv. 13. Soli Deo gloria. _______ In the family vault are deposited the remains of Francis Longworth Esq. of Patfield, Co. Galway, and Creggan, Co. Westmeath, who departed this life on the 4th of February 1856 aged 53. His kind and unobtrusive demeanour, the amiability and generosity of his social disposition, - ever guided by a Christian spirit, - gained for him the love and esteem of his relatives and numerous friends. This tablet is erected by his brothers and sisters as a slight tribute of affection to the memory of a much loved and lamented brother. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord. - Rev., chap. xiv. 13. _______ To the memory of the Honble. Henry Handcock, Captain in the 44th Regt., third son of Richard, third Baron Castlemaine, who died from the effects of injuries received from a tiger at Baudipore, in the East Indies, on the 16th of Decr. 1858, in the 25th year of his age. This tablet is placed by his brother officers in recollection of his manly character and engaging dispotiion, and in sorrow for his untimely end. His remains are interred at Ootacamund, Nillgberrie Hills. _______ Sacred to the memory of the Revd. James Robert Moffat, A.M., who for 41 years was Rector of this parish, the duties of which he faithfully discharged. He departed this life on the 27th of October 1861 in the 71st year of his age. His remains are deposited in a vault adjacent to this church. This monument was erected by his sorrowing widow and sons as a memorial of their love and respect. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth, yea saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours, and their works do follow them. - Rev. 14 chap. 13 verse. _______ Erected by the Athlone Knot of the ancient and most benevolent order of the Frienly Brothers of Saint Patrick to the memory of their perfect and universally respected Brother John Fr, Hodson Esq. of Johnsport, who died the 25th day of June 1860 in the 86th year of his age, for nearly 40 years of which he was a member of this order. _______ Sacred to the memory of William Young Potts, son of William Potts of Corrun in the County Roscommon. Late of Springpark in the County Westmeath Esq. who departed this life on the 26th day of May 1862. _______ In memory of Robert A Berry ob. 6 Nov. 1864 AEt. 19. and Edward N. Berry ob. 4 June 1869. Also his brother James Phillips Oaty who Died the 18th July 1803 Aged 3 years and 5 months, who dies with the small pox. Erected by his Father James Oaty. _______ To the memory of Ribert Moore who departed this life the 14th February 1804, aged 27 years. Erecd by his brothers Thoms & Frances (sic) Moore. _______ Ellen Mathis departed this life the 4th August 1805 aged one year and 4 months. Erected by her Father Hohn Mathis. _______ In memory of Stair Park Dalrymple Esq. of Landlands Ayrshire, North Britain, Lieut. Col. of the 71st Regt. of foot and Major General of his Majesty's forces. He departed this life suddenly at Ballinasloe, from where his remains were removed to this place the 2nd day of Decr. A.D. MDSSSV. aged 55 years. _______ This stone was erected by Jas. Martin Esq. Cavan Militia in memory of his son John who depd. this Life July 25th 1807, agd. 9 months. _______ Sacred to the memory of Rudolf Martin late Sergeant Major in the 97th or Queen's German Regiment of foot who departed this life October 1807 aged 26 years. He lived respected by his Superiors and died Lamented by his Brethren in the Regiment who as a Lasting token of their Respect erected this Stone. _______ Sacred to the memory of Alexander Burk late of the Cavan Regiment who depd. this life January the 10th 1808 agd. 21 years. This stone was erected by his loving Brothers of the Cavan Orange Lodge No. 177 as a token of brotherly affection. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. _______ Underneath this stone consigned to their kindred Earth Lie The Mortal Remains of William Newman Esqr. late Lieutenant in the Limerick County Regt. of Militia who Trusting in the mercies of his God wrought out for him by the merits of his Redeemer died on the 2nd of June 1810 aged 21 years. _______ Brother Joseph White Sergt. Major of the Royal West Middlesex Militia lies here interd aged 32 years. His funeral was attended by the whole officers non-commisd. officers and men of the Regmt. (by all of whom he was respected) and accompd. by the Masters and Brothers of the two Lodges of Athlone 30th June 1812. This stone was in proof of Esteem erected by the Sergeants. _______ Sacred to the memory of John Hull, late Lieut. in the Royal West Middlesex Regiment of Militia who departed this Life Decr. 31st 1812 Aged 52 yrs. His remains were interd. with Millitary Honors amidst the Regret of his Brother Officers by all of whom he was Esteemed and Respected. Requiescat in Pace. _______ To the memory of Adam Betty who died the 19th day of May 1813 agd. 3-1/2 years, Maragret Betty who died the 26th day of February 1814 aged 2-1/2 years, and Anne who died young. _______ Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth Isabella eldest Daughter of Captn. Henry Browne of the Royal Limerick Militia who departed this life the 1st day of November 1818 aged fifteen years. Whoever respects Gentleness and Innocence will abstain from injuring this grave. _______ Sacred to the memory of John Ross son to adjutant Ross of the Armagh Regiment. Died 9th November 1813 aged 4 years and 6 months. _______ To the memory of James Henry late Quarter Master Sergeant of the Armagh Regiment. A faithful Soldier & an honest man. Dy'd Nov. 11th 1813 aged 41. Erected by the officers of his Regt. _______ In memory of Frances the wife of Captn. Martin West Essex Militia Died 12 December 1813 aged 30 years. _______ Sacred to the memory of Captain Wm. MacCulloch of the Corpse (sic) of Royal Engineers who departed this life on the 10th of February 1814 in the 35th year of his age. This officer served in Spain under the Duke of Wellington and particularly at the Seige of Cuidad Rodrijo (sic). _______ Here lies the body of the late Willm. Austin an Ensign in the 2nd Battn. 12th Regiment of foot who died on the 28th February 1814 aged 28 years. This stone is erected to his memory by his brother officers in testimony of the esteem they entertained for him. _______ Sacred to the memory of John Martin late Sergent in the Royal Regt. of Artillery who depd. this life on the 2nd of August 1815 aged 77 years. He served in said Regt. for the space of 40 years. _______ Beneath this Stone is deposited the body of Lieutenant Colonel Macdowall of the Renfrewshire Militia. Born August 26, 1764 died August 3, 1815. * _______ To the memory of Jane Schubert wife of John Schubert Sergeant Major of the 2nd Battalion 84th Regiment of Foot who departed this Life on the 15th day of May 1816 aged 51 years. Underneath this stone doth lie As much virtue as could die Who when alive did vigour give As much virtue as could live. _______ Sacred to the memory of Wm. Cole Hart late a Lieut. in the RI Navy who departed this life the 27th of Decr. 1816 aged 86 yrs. This Stone was erected by his Brother Arthur Cole Hart. _______ Sacred to the memory of Sert. Joseph Hensworth 12th Regiment who departed this life Janry, 9th 1818 aged 31 years. This Stone as a mark of respect and esteem was erecd. by his comrade Sergeants. _______ Sacred to the memory of Color Sergt. Patk. McDonogh 12th Regiment who departed this life Janry. 26th 1818 aged 27 years. This stone as a mark of Respect and esteem was reecd. by his comrade Sergeants. _______ Sacred to the memory of Peter Williamson late private solider in the 78th Regt. of foot who died on the 14th day of July 1820, aged 39 years. This stone was erected by his brother soldiers as a testimony of esteem to he who was an honest man, a friend to truth, a faithful soldier form his youth. _______ Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth Ambrase late wife of Jms. Ambrase Gunner in the Royal Artillery who died in child bed Nov. 7. 1822 in the 20th year of her age, and of Mahala Main late wife Wm. Main Gunner in the Royal Artillery who died 18 April 1823 aged 31 years. They were beloved in life and regretted in death. No further seek their merits or draw their frailties from their dread abode, for here they both in silent dust repose to await the fiat of their judge and God. _______ * There is a monument in the church to Colonel MacDowall. (see page 231) _______ Sacred to the memory of Arthur Greenham Esq. who departed this life the 14th of December 1829 aged 56 years who served in his Majesty's Regt. of 13 Lt. Dr. for 26 years as Quarter aster also in the 10th & 3d R.C. v. Bats as Ensign. This stone was erecd. as a small tribute to his Distinguished worth and excellency by his Disconsolate Widow Margaret Greenham alias Stanley. He was an affectionate Husband and tender Father. The memory of the just is blessed. _______ Sacred to the memory of Lieut. Richd. Fitzgd Ring 68th Regt. Lt. Infy. who died at Shannon Bridge the 13th May 1831 aged 25 years. This stone was placed by the dedire of his afflicted Widow who mourns but not as those without hope. _______ Sacred to the memory of Huddleston Bulter, who died April 11th 1832 aged 56 years. Requiescat in pace. Amen. _______ Sacred to the memory of William Cummin gunner and driver in L. Colonel N. Wildes Co. 8th Batt Royal Artillery who died on the 12. November 1836 aged 31 years. This Stone is erected by his comrades as a mark of their regards for him. _______ Sacred to the memory of Gunner Archibald Murray of the Royal Artillery who died March 21, 1840 aged 24 years. Also Gunner Arthur Corr of the Royal Artillery who died May 17th 1839 aged 32 years. St. John 11th chap. 25. 26 verses. _______ Sacred to the memory of David Denny of Athlone who depd. this life deservedly regrettd 4th of December 1841. His conduct throughout life proved him an affectionate husband a good father and an honest man. He served in her Majestys 68th Regt of foot for 30 years and 2 months and was honoured with a silver medal and 15pounds gratuity. This tomb was erecd. by his beloved wife Mary Denny. He was aged 49 years. Jaques was an inn-keeper at Athlone at the time of the siege. His name appears in the list of attainted Protestants in King's "State of Irish Protestants." His name Jacob Jaques is in an address to James ii, in 1684, and in Hearth Money Return for 1665 appears as Joseph Jaques. _______ Here Lyeth a birgin of unspotted fame Daughter of Joseph Sproule & Joice by name Hither let pious maidens oft repair And as they pass lett fall a Silent Tear obit 23d die Augst Ann Dom 1726.
