(late of New Park)
who was cruelly murdered
at Barbavilla
When returning from
The House of God on Sunday
2nd April 1882

K.C.B., K.C.M.G., Knight of the Legion on Honour & Order of
the Bath, Son of Earl Howe | born 25th October 1829. Joined
the Rifle Brigade in 1845 Served in the Kaffir War 1852-53;
Battle of Berea in Criumean Campaign | military Secretary to
Lord Raglan, Alma, Inkerman, Sevastopol, Brought Home
Dispatches announcing Capture of Sevastopol; Milt Secretary
and D.Q.M. Gen. in Ireland 1865-764 married February 1866
Alicia eldest daughter of Ralph Smyth Esqr. of Drumcree,
whose name he assumed.  Commanded Military District |
Devonport 1877 Lieut-Genl. South Africa | 1880-85 Commanded
Southern District (Portsmouth), 1889-90 Governor | of
Gibraltar | 1890-91 Died 27th January 1891.  Be pitiful, be
| courteous Erected by Alicia | Lady Smyth. Fortis,
amabilis, | constans, omnibus dilectus, suis caris-simus.

East window, of coloured glass, to the memory of :-

Robert Smyth Esqr who departed this life on the 5th
of September 1862, in the 85th year of his age.

In Coelo Quies
Sacred to the | memory of William Smyth Esqr of
Barbavilla | Co Westmeath who departed this | life
on the 13th | March 1810 in the 61st year | of his age.
This monument | is erected by his children | as a small
but just tribute | of their affection.

Mural monument (white marble) with crest and armorial
bearings underneath inscription on the north wall of
interior of church.

Also to the memory of his eldest | son Ralh Smyth Esqr
likewise | of Barbavilla who departed | this life on the
24th January 1814 in the 29th year | of his age.

Silver chalice inscribed :

There is a Memorial Window, having as its subject Christ
suffering little children to come unto Him, in north wall of
church, underneath brass plate, inscribed :

To the glory of God and in memory of Elizabeth | Panette
Smyth who died | September 27th 1877.


The old Church of Kilcumney, now in ruins, contains the
following monuments :

Drumcree Family Vault

Like as a father | pitieth his children the Lord pitieth
them | that fear him.  For he knoweth our frame, | he
remembereth that we are dust |  Psalm ciii. 14.

Mural monument (under each window) of white marble,
surmounted by crest and motto.

Family vault of Smyths, of Glenanea, plain slab without
inscription.

Buring place of Drumcree family, enlarged by Thomas Smyth
Esq., 1756.  Plain stone slab.

Buring place of Smythes of Barbavilla.  Plain slanting stone
slab at west end of exterior of church.  No inscription.
