DUNCANNON FORT
The Following Inscriptions By The Rev. W. Martin.

On the hearthstone of the Garrison Chapel there is a large 
coat of arms taking up half the stone, and thus inscribed?.

Here lyeth the body of William Ans? Of Duncannon who 
departed this life the 29th Oct. 1703 aged ?. (There is a 
considerable portion of the inscription obliterated by 
traffic).

On a stone near the entrance to the Artillery Store, beside 
the Garrison Chapel, there is the following:-

Under lyeth the body of Elizabeth Timson, wife of Captain 
Timson, who died 24th May 1736 aged 31 years. "God bless the 
hands that lay'd this stone, and curse'd be the hands that 
moves her bones.

Alex Castell of Ballyhack, died 18th Oct. 1728, aged 58.

His wife Jane alias Collins, died 8th May 1719 aged 50, and 
four children of their son Edward.

1737 Abraham Stephens, 24th Feb. aged 64.

1742 John Peacock, 4th July aged 23.

1757 Woffingham Chambers, Bricklayer. 7th April.

1796. Dr. Robert Lewis Knox, 31st |July, aged 36.

1815. Anne Wheeler, relic (sic) of the late James Butler 
Norris, Esqr. R.N. 27th Dec. aged 80.

*Joshua Castell, 18th March 1801, aged 61.

Sarah Thomson, wife of Captain Jas. Thompson, one of the 
said Joshua's daughters, 11th August, 1814, aged 30.

Anne McDermott, another daughter of Joshua, who married 
Lieut McDermott of the 9th Dragoons, 20th June 1815, aged 
33.

Mrs Johanna Castell, wife of the said Joshua. 7th April, 
1818, aged 60.

Also John Castell, late Lieut. Wexford Militia, 8th July 
1821, aged 20.

This tomb is surmounted by the Castell Coat of Arms".*

Andrew Buchannan, Esq., Capt. Royal Irish Artillery, and of 
the Duncannon Yeomandry, 22ned April, 1813, aged 75. An 
honest man's the noblest works of God. Erected by his 
son-in-law, Capt. R. Francis, 1824.

1827. On the glacis of the Fort. "This tomb is laid by Mr. 
Edward Saunders, of the Royal Engineers Department, 
Duncannon Fort, in memory of his affectionate wife, Mrs 
Elizabeth Saunders, who died 3rd Feb. 1827, aged 35 years.

1832. To the memory of Frederic Fras. Austin, 2nd son of 
Fort-Major Thomas Austin, born 12th August 1821, died 5th 
April 1832.

Erected by William Nunn Saunders, of Oregan, U.S., in memory 
of his mother, Eugenie Castell Saunders, who died the 6th 
Oct. 1836, aged 45. Of his aunt Jane Castell, who died 11th 
April 1856, aged 70. And of his cousin Anne Castell 
Thompson, who died 2nd Feb. 1865, aged 52 years.

Stone dated 1870. Elizabeth Legge, died 6th April 18**, aged 
28. Jane Battersby, 16th Sept. 1849, aged 70. And William 
Legge, died 30th Oct. 1870, aged 66.

1876. To the memory of William Gatey, Late Lieut., and 
Instructor of Musketry in H.M. 100th Regt, Prince of Wales 
Royal Canadians, this stone is erected by his comrades, the 
Officers, N.C. Officers, and men of the Regiment.

1885. On the glacis of the Fort. Sacred to the memory of 
Bombr. Collar Maker, C. Royds, R.A., who died at Duncannon 
Fort on the 29th Aug. 1885, aged 35 years. This stone has 
been erected by the Officers, N.C. Officers, and men of the 
Royal Artillery

1890. Beneath this stone are laid in joyful hope of 
Resurrection to Eternal Life, the Mortal remains of Anne 
Lymbery, wife of the Rev. J. Lymbery, Ordnance Chaplain at 
Duncannon Fort, died 9th July, 1859. Also Edward Lymbery, 
son of the above, died 15th Dec. 1890. With Christ which is 
far better.

Here lie the Mortal remains of the Rev. John Lymbery, 
Ordnance Chaplain at Duncannon Fort, who died 26th Oct. 
1853, his daughter Lucy Maria, who died 11th Jan, same year, 
and his son Rev. John Lymbery, 37 years Vicar of Hook, who 
died 8th Oct. 1884. Mary Jane Lymbery, died 20th Jan. 1896. 
Rebecca Lymbery died 14th Feb. 1897. Anne Lymbery died 9th 
Jan. 1900.

In the Garrison Chapel, surmounted by the Arms of 
Armstrong-year date is obliterated.

Here lies the body of Major William Armstrong of Duncannon, 
who departed this life 19th Oct.
