Hunt EXTRACTS FROM THE VESTRY BOOK OF THE PARISH OF KILLINICK DIOCESE OF FERNS, Now [1893] in the custody of the Rev. Dr. LATHAM, D.D., Rector of Wexford. This book appears to have had some pages torn out of it. As it now is, the first page begins :- "April 21 : 1772 Paid to the Revd JOHN BROWN, Curate of the parishes of Mulranchan and Kilmannan £5. 5s. 7d. for the poor of said parishes pursuant to the Will of STEPHEN LETT late of Newcastle deceased by the hands of FRANCIS HARVEY." The next entry is::- "Dec. 20, 1773, -Recd from Mr. SAM : BATT five pounds for the Interest of LETT'S legacy for two years ending October 16th 1773." "Jany. 3rd 1774 paid to the Revd JOHN BROWN £3. 6s 8d. for the poor of the parishes of Mulranchan and Kilmannan pursuant to the Will of STEPHEN LETT and £1. 13s 4d. distributed to the poor of the Parish of Maglass." ______ Further distributions are named by the "Reverend Arch Deacon HASTINGS (1776), Revd. Mr. EASTWOOD"; for Mulrankin, "Revd. RICHARD BEVAN, 1781, & from Mr. STUART (?), his predeccessor in the cure of Killinnick." ______ In autumn, 1791, the Revd. RICHD. BEVAN received from the Revd. Mr. WILSON, Rector of Mulrankin, the interest as above. -391- An account of its distribution follows -- nearly all to widows, On the next page is give "A copy of the last will and testament, noncupative of STEPHEN LETT, late of Newcastle in the County of Wexford, Gent., decd., extracted from his Majesty's Count of Perog. (?) in Ireland." The will recites several lagacies, &c, and was attested by Willm. HARVERY, clerk; THOS. FOGARTY, and Will. LETT (his son). It is dated 16th May, 1747. "On Sunday ye 12th of April he gave directions, and died the same day." _____ On the next page are the proceedings of a vestry meeting held at Killinick on 29th March, 1725:- "Whereas the parish church of Killinick ye mother church of ye Union is so much decayed by reason of the rotteness of ye timber and walls, that Divine Service cannot be decently performed, no ye Parishioners attend thereto without exposing their lives, ye said Church being in ye greatest danger of falling by ye violence of ye weather, it is therefore consented unto and agreed by ye Minister, Churchwardens, and ye Parishioners of y Parishes of Killinick, Killrane, * Killmackree, St. Michael's, St. Iberius, St. Mary's, ____ and llsharknum ** to raise money to rebuild it at 3d. per acre. To be paid to the Revd. JAMES HARVEY, Minister." *Killiane. **Isharimon. This is signed by Mr. HARVEY, JOSHUA NUNN, NIC. BARRINGTON, JO BOXWELL, JAS. ADAMS, JOHN SINNOT, EDWARD CHEEVERS, WILLm TANNER, and others. 1764. The £50 left by STEPHEN LETT for the poor was put to interest by the Revd. JAS. HASTINGS to Mr. SAMl. BATT, linen draper, of Wexford. _____ "1766. Paid to Revd. CHRIST. HARVEY, £3.6.8." _____ Next follows an account of the money needed by the Rev. JAS. BARRY, church'd, September 12th, 1802 The Church having been now [1731] rebuilt, the disposal of the "ground" in the said Church for pews was ordered. "That JAMES French of Ballyfennoge to be Surveyor of the highways. "Mr. JOHN JACOB shall serve as surveyor of ye highways in ye parish of St. Michael's. "That NICHOLAS BUNBURY Esqre and JAMES SINNOT shall serve as surveyors in ye Parish of Moyglass. "JOSHUA NUNN Esq. and JAME(S) COGHLAN shall serve as Surveyors in those of St. Iberius and St. Mary's Island." JOHN BOXWELL, signs this, inter alios. The first seat on the N. side of the Commn Table was granted to the Revd JAMES HARVEY (Rector ?). The second seat to ANDREW KNOX Esqre and BERKELEY SIDLEY KNOX Esqre The third seat this side to Mrs. MARTHA BARRINGTON. " fourth " " " " Mr. JOHN BOXWELL and Mr. WILLIAM TANNER. "Ye 1st seat on ye south side of ye Commn Table set apart for ye use of ye Minister of ye Parish for ye time being. "Ye 2nd seat is granted for ye use of ye Reading desk and Pulpit "Mr. JOHN JACOB gets part of the No. 3 seat also Mr. JOHN WHEELOCK. Provision is then made for those who are not able to build pews for themselves. _____ "1734, 27 March: Money to be raised to buy a Bible and books of prayer, a surplice and carpet &c for the church." _____ The Vestry meeting held 3 April 1738. Proceedings signed by JAMES HARVEY, MINr. BER: GID. KNOX, NICHs BARRINGTON, and others. _____ 1739, JOHN GROGAN Esq., Surveyor of Highways. The chief, and sometimes the only business done at many subsequent vestry meetins in this Church, is the appointment of Overseers of Highways for the various parishes of the union, and Churchwardens. On the back of page thirty is an entry of a burial:- "1803. Inter's Mrs. ELIZABETH BATT May the 1st in *Shirthmun" (?) Also:- "May 6th Mrs. SARAH JONES, wife of RICHARD JONES of Bally Brennan at Bally- Brennan. She was a truly pious virtuous and good Christian loving wife, fond Mother and affectionate Neighbor, she is deservedly lamented by her numerous acquaintance and in particular by the writer of this, who can say a Mother in our Israel is fallen to rise at the general resurrection to receive the Crown." _____ 1755. The Parish Clerk's salary, £6 15s 0d., voted regularly. _____ 11 April, 1757.--"Whereas the Roofe of ye Church of Killinick is out of repair and 2 prayer books wanted, ordered." _____ Mention of the sad and cruel work of 1798 named in this page (39), Scullabogue, Vinegar Hill, and Wexford Bridge. _____ The Revd Mr. AMBROSE HARVEY, Surveyor of Highways Kilmackree Parish. Mr. JOHN HARVEY. Overseer, Moyglass Parish. _____ "16 April, 1759.-- Ye Revd Mr. EATON [EYTON?] BUTTS and JAMES GIFFORD shall serve as overseers for ye parish of Killinick." _____ Amb. HARVEY'S and JAMES GIFFORD'S signatures occur here. _____ 1760. MARTIN FORTUNE and GREGORY PETTIT serve for the parishes of St. Iberius and St. Mary's Island. _____ On the back of page 46. The Interest of Lett's Charity appears again for the year 1762, £5. 13s 9d. and it distribution. _____ The 27 day of May, 1760, is the last Vestry signed by "JAS. HARVEY, Minr." The Vestry held on the 27 August, 1760, is signed by "Ja. HASTINGS, Rector," and on the same page as "Minr. On the next page is a long list of bequests left by the late Revd JAMES HARVEY, by will to the poor, in all £5. _____ 1761. JOSHUA NUN (sic) and PHILIP PALLISEER, Esqre appointed Overseer of Highways for St. Iberius and St. Mary's Island. *Ishartmon?? Vestry held in the Church at Killinick, March 27th 1769:- "PHILIP PALLISER of Killiane and BENJAMIN NEALE BAYLY of Silver Spring Esquires are elected Churchwardens for the union of Killinick for the coming year." 1771. Mr. CHARLES WHEELOCK (of Ballyrahan), and Mr. JAMES JONES, of Allenstown (?), churchwardens. _____ 1773. JOHN HARVEY, of Killiane, Esqre and Mr. JOHN BOXWELL, of Linkstown, elected Churchwardens. _____ 1777. Mr. JOHN TANNER, of Ballygollick, and Mr. EDWARD MERRYMAN, of Kish, were elected. _____ The last meeting signed by Mr. HASTINGS (as Minister), is dated 9th April, 1776. _____ 1777. 2 April This Vestry is signed by "JOS. PALMER, Minr." _____ 24 May, 1779. "The Parish being vacant by the promotion of the Revd JOSPh PALMER to the Union of Kilscoran," the usual Easter Vestry could not be held. New Bible and Prayer books ordered. The proceedings are signed "JAMs AIKEN, C. Asst." _____ The next Vestry was held on the 27th October, 1779, and is signed by HENRY ST. ELOY, curate." The old Clerk, ANDREW DAVIS, appears to have died about 1777. NICHOLAS LEWIS appears as Clerk, in March, 1780. HENRY ST. ELOY'S last signature is on the 16th April, 1781. The Vestry meeting of 1 April, 1782, is signed by "RICHARD BEVAN, Minr." _____ He subsequently signs a "Curate" _____ Mr WM. EASTWOOD "signs" for Mr. BEVAN, 1st April, 1788. _____ The proceedings of 13 April, 1789, are signed by RICHd BEVAN, Curate, JEFFRY PAUL (sic), HENRY HOWLIN, JOHN TANNER, JOHN HARVEY, junr, CHRIST. JEFFARES, GEORGE MERYMAN, &c., &c. Both the 'JOHN HARVEYS" sign 25 April, 1791. _____ A Sextoness appears for the first time. _____ A Vestry was held in the Church of Killinick on Sunday, 30 day of April, 1798 [5 days before the Battle of Ross], Mr BEVAN, JOSEPH WHEELOCK, and RICHARD WINTER, present. _____ The next Vestry meeting is dated 29 March, 1799. No mention is made of the late Rebellion. _____ Present Rd BEVAN, Curate; RICHd GAINSFORT, and JOHN BOXWELL, Ch. wardens; AMBROSE HAYS, and SAMUEL BOXWELL, Parishioners. _____ 1802, 19 April, JOSHUA WHEELER POUNDEN, Esqre of Grange and Mr. ROBt FINN, of Broadway, do serve as Churchwardens, RICHARD CHEEVERS (Sidesman), for Killiane. _____ A new Parish Clerk appears, Wm KENDAL (?) in place of NICHs LEWIS. _____ 11 April, 1803. This is the last entry of Vestry proceedings in this book. The next thirteen pages are taken up with lists (apparently) of the payments annually to the poor of the several parishes of the Union on various dates, 1779 to 1797. _____ On the back of the page with the expenditure for 1795, is written, "FUNERALS." "JOHN HARVEY Esqre of Mt. Pleasant buried at Moyglass August 18th 1794. "CHARLES WHEELOCK of Killinick buried Octor 23rd, 1794. "DANIEL BURKE buried October 27th 1794. "ANNE PRICE buried Octor 28th 1794." All. _____ Commencing at the back of this book, and written the contrary way to the rest, are further lists of names of poor peoplereceiving charity "in flax" [LETTS legacy], 3 lbs. each, 1795-1797 ; money was also distributed, the interest recd from the Revd HENRY WILSON. _____ The next entry is :- "A list of the principal Protestant Parishioners of Union of Killinick who subscribed to the defraying of the expenses of the repairs of the church in May 17 82\ 82/ (?) s. d.
