Ruins of the MEDIVAL CATHEDRAL, Ferns, Co. Wexford. These ruins are
located towards the back of the graveyard of ST EDAN's Cathedral.

Photo No.79
Public Notice: FERNS CATHEDRAL
Ferns was once one of the main religious centres of the Kingdom of
Leinster. The earliest Cathedral was built here at the beginning of the
13th Century after the town had been taken over by the Normans. It was
probably founded by the first Norman Bishop of Ferns, JOHN ST JOHN.
In 1577 the Cathedral was attacked and burnt by FIACH MacHUGH O'BYRNE, a
local chiefton who was later forced to rebuild it. Most of the original
Cathedral has been lost, though the present Church of Ireland building -
ST. EDANs, built in 1817 - incorporates parts of it. But the principal
remains are fragment of the two side walls of the 13th Century
Cathedral. Each wall had seven pointed windows; today only five survive
in the north wall and one in the south wall.
Nearby, in the graveyard, are some plain high crosses and part of a
thin, decorated cross which is said to mark the grave of DIARMUIT
MacMURROUGH, King of Leinster.

Photo No.87
Public Notice: ST. MARY's ABBEY, Ferns
The first Christian settlement in Ferns was in about 600 AD when St.
M'AODOG | founded his monastery here. In 930 the monks were attacked
and robbed by Viking raiders and the monastery destroyed.
Over two hundred years later, a new monastery was founded by DIARMAIT
MacMURROUGH - notorious as the Irish King who first brought Norman
Barons from Britain to help him in a local dispute. DIARMAIT, who was a
generous patron of the church invited a group of Augustinian monks to
run the monastery and bring the word of God to local people
Only parts of the church and the vaulted chancel (the east end of the
church where the altar stood) survive today. Behind the chancel is the
small sacristy where vest-ments and sacred vessels were kept and from
which a stairs rises to the sacristan's room. The most unusual feature
is the tower which has a square shape in the lower section but turns
around tower higher up. A circular stairs leads up to a belfry.
