Cemetery: Delgany Old Churchyard & Kiltegan Parish *********************************************** Ireland Genealogy Projects Archives Wicklow Index Copyright ************************************************ File contributed by: C. Hunt & C. Ewald DELGANY OLD CHURCHYARD [From the Rev. R. S. Maffett.] Taken June, 1893. 'A flat stone near the centre of the boundary opposite to the entrance To the churchyard, has the following inscription to a member of the SCOTT Family, whose chief burial-place was Kilcoole':-- "Here Lieth the Body of Elizabeth Scott Daughter of iohn Scott Esq.r of Ballygannon who Departed this Life the 22 of iuly 1774 Aged 35 years. Also Martha Pender Aunt of the Above Elizabeth Scott who Departed this Life the 29 of iuly 1785 Aged 68 years." _____ 'A flat stone near the same boundary, but lying farther from the village, has the following inscription. If the figure enclosed in brackets should be "0," the date would seem to be the oldest extant in the churchyard':-- "Here . Lieth . The BODY . OF . John . . Fox . DECEASD . FEBRU- ARY . The . 1st . 17[8?]4 . Aged . 65 . YEArs." _____ 'An upright stone near the road, beyond the entrance to the churchyard, bears the surname belonging to a small body of Welsh settlers at Grey- stones. The name of "EVANS" is at present the most frequently met with in that village, "DOYLE" being also very common. The third line of the inscription is partially covered with sod. The last two letters of the first line, and the last of the second, are smaller than, and above, the others':-- "HERE . LIETH . Ye BODY . OF . THOMAS . EVANs. DECEASD . SEPr . Ye . 4 . 1731." _____ 187 WICKLOW 'A small piece, with a date, has been broken off the ELLIOT stone lately. I may perhaps anticipate the "Errata" by saying here that "M" should have appeared in that inscription (1892) instead of "Fii."' _____ 'It is a pity that the old stone with the Irish inscription, which makes this churchyard interesting, is not in its original upright position.' _____ 'Ware, under the date of A.D. 1022, says that "Ugair, King of Leinster, overthrew Sitricus, King of Dublin. In a battle at Delgne." Long before the defeat of the Danish king, "Delgne" was known as the site of a ceil founded by St. Mogoroc, the brother of St. Canoe, who lived at the close of the fifth century. The credit of identifying this place with Delgany, belongs, it seems, to Dr. Lanigan, the eminent R. C. ecclesiastical historian. _____ KILTEGAN PARISH [Kindly contributed by Mrs. A.
