LETTER FROM EDWARD JOHNSON TO EDWARD JOHNSTON, ESQ, THE 
PRIVATE SECRETARY OF THE LORD LIEUTENANT OF IRELAND, DUBLIN 
CASTLE - 1822

Knocknamohill Nov. 13th 1822

Dear Sir

As his Majestys Gold Mine In The County Of Wicklow Lieth 
Idle And As I Think I Have A Competent Knowledge Of The 
Scientifick Mode Of Working It I Beg Leave To Address You 
Hoping That You Will Be Kind Enough To Lay My Proposal 
Before His Excellency The Lord Lieutenant Which Is As 
Follows: 

I Edward Johnson Of Knocknamohill In The County Of Wicklow 
Do Propose To Set On His Majestys Gold Mine At My Own 
Expence And Pay His Majesty One Third Part Of The Clear 
Profit Arising Therefrom If I Should Be Permitted By His 
Majestys Goverment To Work The Gold Mine And If It Should 
Succeed With Me Of Which I Have Great Hope It Would Be The 
Means Of Giving Employment To A Great Number Of Poor People 
Who Are In Great Need Of It And Who Altho Distressed Are 
Remarkable For Their

[P.2] Peaceable Conduct As To Character I Beg Leave To Refer 
To Thomas Ryder Pepper Esq Brother In Law To Sir Benjamin 
Bloomfield And Captain Abraham Mills Formerly Of The 
Ordinance Department He Knows Me As A Yeoman Since The Year 
1798 He Also Knows I Understand How Gold Mine Should Be 
Worked. I Have The Honour To Be Second Lieutenant In His 
Corps Of Yeomen The Cronebane	If You Condescend To Answer 
My Letter Direct To Edward Johnson Knocknamohill Arklow Care 
Of Mr Richard Johnson Newbridge
