 BAGENALSTOWN

An inland town in the county of Carlow, pleasantly situated on the river Barrow, the sessions-house, with its handsome building, occupying an elevated site, is a remarkable object. There is a Protestant church, Methodist chapel, and Roman Catholic Church in the town, and several flour mills and extensive malting concerns in the neighbourhood. Many hands are employed in and around the town in quarrying and dressing granite blocks and sandstone flags, which are readily conveyed to various parts by the Barrow River.

Here is the junction of the Irish South-Eastern, the Carlow branch of the Great Southern, and the Bagenalstown and Wexford lines of Railway, Fairs are held on the Monday before the second Wednesday in each month, and there is a large market weekly, chiefly for wool, corn and butter. Town revenue, 1882, £215; expenditure, £194. Population in was 1871, 2,309; and in 1881 it was 2,141.

Carlow, an inland county in Leinster province, Boundaries: N., .Kildare and Wicklow; E., Wicklow and Wexford- S Wexford. W, Kilkenny and Queen's. ‘Greatest length, N. and S., 29 miles; greatest breadth, E and W .,20J;' comprising an area of 221,344 acres of which 193,649 are arable, 2,933 in plantation, 4 6S8 under bog’ and marsh, 10,901 under barren mountain land, 8,705 under roads, fences, &c., and 498 under water. The surface is generally level, except the baronies which adjoin the county Wicklow, and which partake of its hilly character.

On the western side of the river Barrow the colliery range extends from N. to S. through the barony of Idrone West, some of the hills rising to the height of 1,000 feet above the level of the sea, which, being in some places wooded and cultivated to the top, form a beautiful landscape. On the eastern, side a succession of fertile table-land extends to Borris, and on the S.E. is Mount Leinster, attaining a height of 2,604feet.

The Slaney flows through the county, as also the Barrow, which skirts it on the w.; the northern part separating it from the Queen's County, the middle part, from its own barony of, Idrone West, and the southern part, from the county of Kilkenny. The sinking of the river Burren, by the Board; of Works, has contributed much to the value of the alluvial soils of the interior of the county. The staple trade is in corn, flour, meal, butter, and provisions, which are exported in large quantities.

The county is divided into 7 baronies, 35-civil parishes, 12 parts of parishes, and 597 townlands, having a population in 1881 of 46,668, or 9,196 families, inhabiting 8,846 houses; also 534 uninhabited, and 6 building.

The county is in Leighlin diocese. The principal town is the county town and Parliamentary borough of Carlow, population in 1881, 7,185, of which 1,287 is in Queen's County; other towns, exceeding 500 in population in 1881:- Bagnalstown 2,141, Tullow 1,977, Leighlinbridge 835, Hacketstown 721, Borris 617.

The county returns 3 members to Parliament — 2 for the county at large, constituency, 1883-84, 2,219, with 9 polling places, and 1 for Carlow borough, constituency, 291. The Assizes are held at Carlow, and Quarter Sessions at Carlow, Bagenalstown, and Tullow. There are 7 Petty Sessions' Court districts, or parts of districts, in the county. There is no Poor Law Union wholly within the county, but Carlow contains portions of the five unions of Carlow, Baltinglass, Enniscorthy, New Boss, and Shillelagh.

The constabulary force of the county consists of 4 officers and 114 men. The county is within the Dublin military district, and forms part of No. 66 Sub-District, in conjunction with the cos. Dublin, Kildare, and Wicklow. The Brigade Depot is at Naas, in the co. Kildare. 'The county contains 1 Barrack Station for Cavalry and Infantry at Carlow.

EDUCATION—SCHOOLS, 1881.

Number of persons in the county who could read and write, 26,506; who, could read only, 7,080; the remainder, 13.020, being unable to react or write. Persons who speak Irish only11; Irish and English, 192. Number of Superior Schools, 9, attended by 418 pupils, of whom 300 were Roman Catholics and CO Protestants. Number of Primary Schools, 82, attended by 6,480 pupils, of whom 5,720 were Roman Catholics and 705 Protestants. Population under 7 years of age, 6,861; males, 3,443; females, 3,421.
