Bagenalstown. Co Carlow

BAGNALSTOWN (or BAGENALSTOWN) is a municipal town in the parish of Dunleckny, East Idrone barony, co. Carlow, head of a petty sessional division and of a dispensary district in Carlow union, Protestant diocese of Leighlin, Catholic diocese of Kildare, 66 miles by rail south-west from Dublin, about 2 south from Leighlin Bridge, on the river Barrow, 8 and half miles south from Carlow, with a junction station on the Great Southern and Western railway of the line to Kilkenny, connecting with the Waterford and Central Ireland railway.

It has been improving in trade for several years past, and is now a place of considerable business in corn and flour, several large mills being within it and in the neighbourhood. Near the town are extensive quarries of granite, marble and limestone. Mr. Newton and Mr. Bagenal, the proprietors of the town, have greatly improved it, and especially the session’s house, with its Ionic portico.

Ward's is an excellent family and commercial hotel. The Protestant church is a handsome building: with a pinnacle tower. The Catholic Church is also an ornament to the town; and there is one for Wesleyans. There are three National schools here, one of which is conducted by the nuns of the Presentation Convent, and there are also a Christian Brothers' school and a school for infants; a well-supported fever hospital and a dispensary.

The contiguous mansion of Dunleckny, which has been modernized, was the ancient seat of the Bagnals or Bagenals, who settled in this county about the middle of the 16th century. Fairs are held on the first Monday after first Wednesday in each month. The area of the township comprises 427 acres; the population in 1891 was 1,920
