- "I was in the cemetery today taking photos and came across this
grave of a Carlow resident. I thought maybe it would somehow be of
interest to somebody there. This person is buried in the evergreen

- Catherine Clarke c1850's
This is a plaque at St. Mary's CoI Carlow which seems to have escaped
the notice of researchers and maybe it is worth including.
The plaque was erected by my GGF Simeon Clarke in memory of his wife
Catherine and is on the outside wall to the left of the main doors of
St. Mary's Church.
It was somewhat hidden by a tree and even the recent and current
vicars were unaware of its existence but it is there alright - in case
the attached picture is unclear it reads:
- UNDERNEATH ARE DEPOSITED
- THE REMAINS OF
- CATHERINE
- BELOVED WIFE OF
- MR. SIMEON CLARKE
- OF HANOVER CARLOW.
As you can see it is undated but my best guess is around 1850. I must
say I find the wording interesting - 'deposited and remains' rather than
simply 'here lies' etc - does it suggest a death at sea or in a fire?
