The death occurred suddenly in
London on Saturday 21 January of John Purcell, eldest son of the
late Michael and Esther Purcell of Coal Market, Kennedy Street,
Carlow.
John
was visiting friends in Brentwood, Essex when he died.
He was well known as a
carpenter in the Carlow area before emigrating to England with his
family in the 1960s to take up a post as resident caretaker at the
headquarters of the Provincial Bank of Ireland in Throgmorton Street
in the City of London.
He
remained working in the city until his retirement some years ago.
During his time in London,
John was a supporter of the Carlow Association and was a regular at
many of its functions.
Over
the years, John was a constant visitor to Carlow, where he enjoyed
meeting up with family and friends for a drink and a chat.
Following retirement, John
lived in Brentwood and, more recently, he moved to Billericay in
Essex, where he was living at the time of his death.
He
is mourned by his wife Francis, sons Tony and Leonard, daughters
Pauline and Suzanne and grandchildren, brothers, sisters, nieces,
nephews and friends.
John’s funeral will take place in London.
