Parish of Old Leighlin.

PARISH REGISTER, 1781 TO 1813.

MEMORANDUM.

     "In October, 1874, the only Parish Register in existence (so far as I could
ascertain) of the Parish of  Old Leighlin, consisted of 39 loose pages,
foolscap size; they were in a very dilapidated state in an old cover, and were said to have been found on a manure heap outside the house of Thomas Jones, the parish clerk, at the Cathedral, shortly after his death (about 1840).

     About the year 1863, I bought a book and gave it to the incumbent, the Rev.Jas.Carlton, and the entries on the loose pages were copied into it, and it is now (1893) in the Public Record Office, Dublin.

     The first entry in the book is a Baptism, dated 6th March, 1781.

     The first Marriage is dated 1st April, 1790, and the first burial, 27th June 1781.?

     The entries extend to the year 1804, from which date there is a gap until 1836, when they are continued until 1848. The entries in the following pages, which are taken from a M.S. in my Grandfather's writing, are much more complete than the copy in the Public Record Office, and include Births, Marriages and Deaths from 1804 to 1813, and are probably the only record extant of these."

     The Rev.Edward Vigors was curate of all the parishes named, excepting Shankill, of which he was Rector. He died June 27th, 1797, and was succeeded by his only son, the Rev.Thomas Mercer Vigors, who was "Perpetual" Curate of these parishes until he was appointed Rector of Rathasbeck, Queen?s County, in 1815.

     "To show the importance of these, we have only to mention that within the last month application has been made to me about a birth in this parish, on the proof of which a considerable amount of money, left by a relative in America, depends.- P.D.V.

Erected by JOSEPH HARTFORD of Clogrennan in memory of his beloved wife JANE HARTFORD alias OLIVER who departed this life I 2^nd June 1835 in the 39 year of her age.

Stranger turn this way and stop 
Her character claims from you a tear
For Jane was loved by all her friends 
To them she was most dear
They for a time from her must part 
To leave her body under this sod 
Yet it consoles them to think in their tears
That her spirit now rests with God.

EDMOND BRINE* of Ballycapell in the County of Wicklow Esqr. died the 26th of March 1624 He married Ellen daughter of Fardarough Gormogan of the Grangeforth in the County of Catherlough, by whom he had issue, James, Turlagh, Morgan, Christopher, Walter, Garret, Margarett, Dorothy, Mary, Ellis, Joan, and Ann. He was Buried in Old Laughlin in the County of Catherlagh the Last of March 1624.

(Catherlagh is now Carlow)

 Clonmore Parish.

Clonmore Churchyard.

     'Clonmore, so interesting for it’s ancient remains, lies between Tullow and Hacklestown, 8 miles to the north east of the former.  To distinguish it from other Clonmores (“the big meadow”) it was known in ancient times as Clonmore – Mouge after it’s patron saint –St. Mouge, venerated on 11^th April. ‘Within a distance of half a mile, in an east- to –west direction, the following objects  of archeogical interest are to be met with.

1. Pagan asphilchrul Most
2.  The old churchyard, and shaft of and head of a High Cross.
3. “St Mogues Cross” ringed but not peforated , and undivided into panels.
4. “St. Mogues Cross” now neglected.
5.  A triple bullan stone.
6. The extensive ruins of a castle.

     'The churchyard contains no ruins of the old church.  About the middle of the ground, stands the broken shaft of a cross, 6 feet 2 inches high inserted in a square base; the sides of teh shaft measure 18 by 12 inches; a perch to the south of it, half sunk in the ground, lies it’s ringed head, sculptured but not perforated.  Several granite slabs and boulders, which stand or lie sucumbent among the graves, bear in relief either a ringed or plain cross.

     'In the south-east corner of the church yard, near a large sycamore tree, there is a granite slab set up on it’s side sunk in the ground measuring 4 foot in length, and averaging 7 inches in thickness; in the middle of it an oblong hole, 9 inches by 6inches, which appears to be intended as a socket for the dowel of a cross.
