Pat Purcell Papers Warning 1833
By kind permission of Michael Purcell
Be it remembered that on Thursday the Eight day of August in the
year of Our Lord One thousand Eight hundred and thirty three Anne
Fitzpatrick of Clogrennan in the County of Carlow, Widow , was
convicted before William Fishbourne, John Staunton Rochfort, William
Cary, Thomas Haughton and Thomas Tench Vigors, Esquires five of His
Majestys Justices of the Peace for the County of Carlow for that she
did within the last two months sell Spirituous liquors by retail at
her residence aforesaid she not being duly licensed so to do and
Contrary to the Statute in that case made and provided that she sell
only Stout and Ale, in Order that the Spirituous liquors be avoided
by the lower classes in the country places the consummation of same
to be the cause of unlawful assembly, fighting, felonious acts and
rioting and speech against our Lord Sovereign the King and his Heirs
and His Peace. And we do therefore adjudge the said Anne Fitzpatrick
to have forfeited the sum of Forty Shillings and in default to be
confined in the Gaol of Carlow for One Month unless said sum be
sooner paid. His Majestys Justices serve this as a warning to others
some of whom are present here today this being the most lenient
sentence we propose to issue for this crime.
