Whelan + Warren 1850s

Extract from letter to Pat Purcell dated 1977 recorded on index card the following -.

I am tracing 5 Whelan brothers, sons of a farmer, from Carlow who came from Carlow to London in the 1840s.

John, born possibly 1815, James, born possibly 1819, Daniel, Edward and Patrick Whelan, they came to live with an affluent relative in London.

Patrick died at 144 Fetter Lane, London on 26th October 1849,aged 15.

John died in 1861, in his will he mentioned his cousins, John Whelan, Nurney, Margaret Whelan (nee McGrath) from Blackbog, Carlow.

My father's family were Anglo-Irish Warrens, not always accurately described in Burke's Family Pedigree. A branch of the family settled in Carlow, two sons went to Canada in 1821, they are mentioned in "The Irishman in Canada" by Nicholas Flood Daven.

Dr. Percival Sydney Warren now living in Edmonton, Alberta was descended from one of the brothers, I enclose an extensive family tree compiled by him unfortunately some of the dates are inaccurate.

Colonel Edward Warren was an officer in the army of Cromwell, he was called "Cromwell's Dog"  he was convicted of High Treason for attempting to retain by force lands granted by Cromwell, he was hanged by order of the Duke of Ormonde on the 13th July 1663, his head was displayed on a spike at Dublin Castle.

Viscount Tara married Margaret Warren, both died and their children were raised by their aunt Elizabeth Warren, their daughter married Captain Henry Rochfort.

Ryan/Whelan/Byrne

In 1817 Philip Germaine then of Grange Con, later of  Lisnevagh, m. Mary Ann Ryan nee Whelan, daughter of Patrick Whelan, Salesmaster of Smithfield, (horse market) city of Dublin. Source Registry of Deeds 716/489874, 1817.

She d. and in 1825 Philip m. again, Maria Byrne, d. of Joseph Byrne, also salesmaster of Smithfield. The marriage settlement deed is between Joseph Whelan, Philip, Maria, James Whelan of Smithfield, salesmaster, and John Germaine of Grange Con. (R. of Deeds 809/545601, 1825).  There appear to be family relationships between Byrnes and Whelans.

Regarding the Whelans I know of a Christopher Whealen who was leasing 7+ acres from the Lecky family on the south side of Ballon Hill in 1787.

This information is based upon a map and accompanying legend which was reviewed in a past issue of the Ballon-Rathoe Chronicle (RN: If anyone is interested communicate with me offline). As an aside, the Chronicle has now ceased publication as off last December.

I also recall seeing the Whelan name on tombstones in Ballon. There are two tombstones at least.

At http://www.nolanfamilies.org/gallery/search.php  enter Whelan as a  search term to view the transcribed information.

The tombstones suggest a Whelan+Nowlan marriage in the mid-to-late 1700s.
