Description
Lease made between Sir Charles William Cuffe Burton,
Pollerton, county Carlow, of one part, and Henry Bruen, Oak
park, county Carlow, Member of Parliament, of the other
part, in respect of piece of ground heretofore used as a
quarry with adjacent plot in Carlow, county Carlow. Bounded
on the north by Dublin road, on the south by the College
wall and holdings in School lane, on the east by Bernard
lane and on the west by Chapel lane. Lease to run for 999
years at annual rent of £24 sterling. Bruen covenants to
fill up the quarry hole on the premises and level it within
two years. Also, to build a wall of three feet in height
around the premises within two years. Map of premises

Description
Copy of letter from Thomas C. Butler, Rose ville, Carlow,
solicitor, to Edward Burton, esquire. In response to request
by Burton, Butler writes that Sir Charles Burton may be
saved the trouble of coming to Ireland to be sworn in as
High Sheriff of Carlow. He can be sworn in at Leicester.
Also writes that he hopes Edward Burton has confidence in
his professional ability. Butler writes, 'I take the liberty
of making those latter observations in consequence of the
most unusual practice which I believe has been resorted to
by members of my Profession, canvassing for whatever
business they conceived was in the late Mr Elliott's
office...'

£34.14.3. Draft memorial of this indenture to be sent to the

Civil bill (29 May 1851) states that Sir Charles wishes to
recover possession of part of the lands of Knocknabodally (Knockbodaly),
parish of Graig, barony of Gowran, county Kilkenny,
containing 14 acres, 1 rood and 31 perches plantation
measure. Briscoe has deserted the premises and left without
leaving sufficient distress to cover rent arrears of £46
sterling.

Description
Letter from Messrs Wolfe, Burke and Courtenay, 23 Upper
Gloucester street, Dublin, to Edward Burton, esquire, in
relation to head rent for the Burren land near Carlow. These
lands are leased by the Michell family to Mr Lawler and a
man named Finlan. Writer enquires as to how the head rent
account stands as it ought to pass through the Michells'
hands. Note attached which states that a renewal of this
lease was granted on 7 May 1813 and that a notice to renew
has been granted.

Francis Haly, Roman Catholic Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin,
and Reverend James Maher, parish priest of Graigue
(Graiguecullen), of the other part. Bishop Haly and Reverend
Maher are named in the will of Catherine Nowlan, late of
Carlow, spinster, deceased. Will was proved by Reverend
Maher on 7 November 1839. Bishop Haly and Reverend Maher are
now acting as trustees for the religious community, the
Sisters of Mercy. Recites indenture dated 13 June 1759
(described as document number P1/0165). The 1759 lease is
now converted into a fee farm grant. Annual fee farm rent is
£7.17.0 sterling.

Carlow, county Carlow. Situated at corner of Chapel lane.
Lately in the possession of William Coe and Garret Burne and
others. Lease to run for 999 years for annual rent of £20
sterling. Map present. Drawn by James Hade, civil engineer.
It is noted that a memorial of this deed was registered at
the Registry Office, city of Dublin, on 15 April 1856 in
book 10, number 240. Endorsement on verso comprises
indenture (31 March 1898) made between Sir Charles William
Cuffe Burton, of one part, and Thomas Richards and Michael
J. Richards, both of Carlow, county Carlow, merchants, of
the other part. Bruen's interest in the premises is now
vested in the Richards. Also states that the premises is at
location in Carlow known as Dublin road and College street
(formerly Chapel lane). The Richards have sold part of the
premises to Carlow Town Commissioners for the purpose of
road widening. In this indenture, Sir William consents to
this transfer of land to the Commissioners in consideration
of full payment of rent by the Richards.

1746 and made between Robert Burton, Harristown, county
Kildare, esquire, of one part, and Abraham Michell, Carlow,
county Carlow, farmer, of the other part, in respect of part
of the Burrin land containing 6 acres and 3 roods plantation
measure. To be held for three named lives with covenant for
perpetual renewal. Last renewal of this lease was made on 7
May 1813 between Sir Charles Burton, Pollerton, county
Carlow, of one part, and James Michell, then a Lieutenant in
His Majesty's 24th Regiment of Foot.
