Nationalist and Leinster Times, 19th October 1918. The Death of Mr Denis Brennan, Woodlandss. We regret to announce the death of Mr Denis Brennan, which sad event took place at his residence, Woodlandss, Ballickmoyler, on October 16th. 1918. Deceased who was a brother of Rev Edward. Brennan, P.P. Mountrath, was of a very kind and generous disposition, a good neighbour and a sincere friend. To his relatives we offer our deepest sympathy. The funeral which was large and representative, took place on Friday last, to Arles, where Office and Requiem Mass were celebrated. The chief mourners were -- Rev. E. Brennan, P.P. (brother), P.J. Carey, M. Doyle and P. Lawlor (brothers-in-law). T. Byrne, L. Byrne, W. Carey, J.O. Leary (nephews). J. Coogan, J. Mahon, R. Mahon, A. Wall, J. Wall, P. Brennan (cousins). The clergy present at Office were - Rev James Farrell, P.P. Arles, celebrant; Rev. W. Wilson, C.C. Luggacurren, deacon; Rev. J. Dunny, C.C. Carlow-Graigue, sub-deacon; Rev. James Boland, C.C. Arles, master of ceremonies. In the choir, Very Rev. E. Brennan, P.P. V.F., presiding; Very Rev. P. Gorry, P.P. Tinryland ; Rev. J. Parkinson, Luggacurren; Rev J. Byrne, P.P. Tolerton; Rev. A. Lynam, Adm. Carlow; Rev. P. Donnelly, C.C. Carlow; Rev. W. Byrne, C.C. Mountrath. [Note added 2011. In Obituaries published at this time women were not named among the mourners!] The Death Notice for Denis in the Nationalists and Leinster Times reads. Denis Brennan at his residence Woodlands, Ballickmoyler, 16th October 1918, aged 73 years. Office and High Mass at Arles on Friday, 18th October 1918. (Note: Denis Brennan is Michael Brennan's 2 times Great Uncle) Funeral immediately afterwards. (the following report might give us a clue as to the cause of death ?) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Nationalist and Leinster Times, 19th October 1918. The Spanish Flu. Carlow is suffering severely from the influenza epidemic, which appears to be almost world-wide. Things are serious in Carlow. Over sixty asylum patients have been stricken, and eighteen of the attendants, two of whom have died. All the hospitals are filled and an assistant has been appointed to help the Carlow Dispensary Medical Officer, Dr. L. Doyle. Last week a thousand died in Ireland, Most of the country schools are now closed. In some places the entire postal staffs have collapsed. Throughout Ireland generally, the fearful scourge commonly known as the "Spanish Flu" is taking a toll of the population. times (Note: Denis Brennan is Michael Brennan's 2 times Great Uncle)
