BOWLES |
- John Bowles married to Ann Mills about 1799. They
lived Dunleckney, Co. Carlow from about 1808 to 1818, four children born
there and then emigrated to Canada. He would have been the shoemaker in
Dunleckney. They also had three children before Dunleckney but I don't
know where yet.
His brother, Joseph Bowles, married to Ann Feltus (probably she was from
Dunleckney) in Carlow town in 1808 where he was a shoemaker with a shop
on Burrin Street. He emigrated to Canada about 1830.
William Bowles, probably another brother, lived in Carlow town until
dying there in 1886 at age 86. Do not know his occupation for sure but
he may have been a saddlemaker. I believe he was married and had
children but have not found any records to prove that yet.
The Bowles family was all from Ballickmoyler, co. Laois but had strong
repetitive connections with Carlow town and Dunleckney from the
mid-1700's.
In co. Laois were tenants of the Cooper family from Newtown, Co. Carlow
which is near Dunleckney so the Coopers may have been their ongoing
connection to that area.
Would be interested in any Bowles/Boles information from anytime and
anywhere in Carlow. My known information is posted at

CAVANAGH,
KAVANAGH, CAVANAUGH, KAVANAUGH, KAVANNAH, |
- I am searching for LAWRENCE CALVIN CAVANAGH, who
died in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1920. His obituary stated he
came from Ireland 60 years prior, so in 1860. He was born abt October
1837 in Ireland. His wife most likely provided that information.
However, my mother, his granddaughter, said that family legend was
that he came as a boy, that his parents died during the passage, that
the ship went to the Grosse Ile quarantine station near Quebec,
instead of to Halifax, their destination, because of disease. Another
boy was said to have survived. They ran away from the French priests
who were trying to assist them, worked in lumber yards in northern New
England, and Lawrence Calvin Cavanagh eventually made his way to
Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, where relatives already lived. He had 8
daughters and no sons, so I cannot guess his father's name. He named
his first daughter Mary Elizabeth, the second daughter Augusta, the
third daughter was known as Frances Effie (but her name may have been
Malvinah or Alvinah), then came Alice, Emma, Annie, Catherine, and
Elinor. I am puzzled that a Roman Catholic family would choose CALVIN
as his middle name. If anyone has women with any of these names,
- especially Mary Elizabeth or Augusta, or has any
information for Lawrence Calvin Cavanagh (any spelling), I would be
very happy to hear about it.
- Thank you in advance. Shirley

Crawford - Tullow - William Crawford born about 1846,
reputedly in Carlow. Married Lucy Anne French (born 1850 in Monivea,
Galway) in Ottawa, Canada in 1874. Parents listed as George and Margaret
Crawford. William Crawford was a teacher in Ottawa. He moved to the Parry
Sound area in Ontario shortly after his marriage and died in 1879 leaving
his wife and two children. There is only one Crawford in the
Griffith's Valuation for Carlow and that is George Crawford living at The
Course, Townland of Tullow in the parish of Tullowphelim. I think it is
quite possible that this George Crawford is William's father. I
would love to hear from anyone with information or similar connections.

It may be a long shot but the name Carr
rang a bell. The father of George Bernard Shaw, of Carlow of course, was

Shaw was born in 1832.

and also had connections to Tullow.

DOYLE/CONROY |
- My G-Grandfather, Michael Doyle was born at
Ballykealy in 1816, son of Michael and Mary Dowling/Doolin. He married
Mary Conroy, of Ballymogue, at Ballon, in 1843. Michael and Mary, with
son, Michael, emigrated to America in 1846, settled first in New
Jersey and in 1850 moved to Winchester, Illinois. Two of Michael's
brothers, James and Hugh emigrated about 1849 to New York and settled
in Westminster, Maryland. I can account for most of the descendants of
Michael and Mary, but have lost the trail on the Maryland branches. At
least one sister, Mary Katherine, also emigrated, and settled in
Winchester after marrying Francis O'Brien. A brother, Yhomas remained
at Ballykealy and died there in 1869. Michael's other three brothers
and two sisters are not accounted for at all.

DARCY / MURPHY/
-
HOLMES / BYRNE
|
-
My surnames are as follows:
DARCY--Rathneegerath, Drumfea, Knockadrane, Myshall R.C. parish
MURPHY--the same
HOLMES--the same
BYRNE--the same
These four families intermarried during the early 19th century and the
lines become quite confused. My ancestors, Murt Darcy & Catharine Murphy,
were married in Myshall R.C. Church (probably Drumfea Chapel) in 1835 per
parish record.
Darcy females married into the Holmes and Byrne lines, about the same
time.

Still working on DARCY and MURPHY, but am also chasing collateral
STAPLETON relatives as well. Query: the surname "D'arcy" doesn't show up
on the 17th century list of original Carlow landholders - could it be
that the Darcy family groups moved to Carlow sometime after Cromwell
confiscated all the land from another county, say Kilkenny, Wicklow or
Wexford there the surname is quite common.
