O'NEILL |
I am trying to find out information about Martin and

many children. If anyone has any information, I would love to hear from
you! Thanks in advance! |

O'NEILL |
- I am wondering if any of you listers out there can
help me.
- My g-g grandfather's name was Patrick O'Neil(l).
The information that I have says that he was born in 1832 in "Carlow,
Ireland." (Whether this is a reference to the city of Carlow or the
county, I have no way of knowing.) Patrick had at least one other
sibling. His name was Henry, and he was born in December of 1834. I am
almost positive that Patrick & Henry's parents' names were John &
Catherine O'Neil(l).
- What I am interested in is information about any of
the above-mentioned individuals (e.g. where in County Carlow they were
from, who their siblings were, who their ancestors were, etc.)
- Any help would be greatly appreciated.
- Regards,
- Mark O'Neill

Looking for Irish Quaker family of MARGARET PAYNE (b.c.

1830), Elizabeth (b. abt. 1833) and John (b. abt. 1836). Elizabeth was
born in County Carlow, Ireland and reason to believe they all came from
Hacketstown, Co. Carlow. With exception of the patriarch, Henry, the
family emigrated to Canada about 1850 and settled in Perth Cty.,
Ontario, Canada. Would like any information to confirm the location in

PATCHELL |
- Some details :
- My paternal grandmother was Ellen Patchell. She died
in Cork on 7 January 1937.
- I think that she was about 66/70 years old, so
probably born around 1867/1871. I am not sure if she herself was from
Carlow, but I am sure her father was. Her father was John Patchell, died
in Cork on 17 March 1890, aged 50, so born about 1840. He was a railway
station master in Little Island, Cork. They were of the Church of
Ireland.
- I would love to find some trace of them in Carlow,
and would really appreciate if anybody there can help me.

Catherine Prendergast my Great, Great Grandmother married
one Patrick Shannon and ended up in County Clare? I have no idea why or
how Patrick and Catherine met? I'm working on the Pennsylvania records
now. James Prendergast who came over to Pennsylvania in the late 1800's is
buried at a very old cemetery up on a hill in Clearfield County,
Pennsylvania. His stone is gone, so I'm going to PA in June and having
another one put up in Memory of him (have no idea where he's buried
there). I know Catherine lived to be quite old and fell at a 4th of July
party and broke her leg and died soon afterwards. James her father lived
to be 100 years of age.

QUINN |
Several Quinn's from Borris, Carlow emigrated to Canada,
and settled in the St. Anicet area near Three Rivers, Quebec. The
emigration appears to have been in concert with emigration to the same
area by a family from Borris named Curren (Currin, Curran). James Curren
was Godfather to Peter Quinn, and he (or possibly a son) died in St.
Anicet in 1878, aged 80 years. I believe all of these people emigrated
between 1820 and 1830:
Peter Quinn, Michael Quinn, John Quinn, Thomas Quinn
James Curren Hugh Curren William Curren J Curren (may be James or
another)
The Quinns came from the Ballinagree area of Borris,
Carlow, and I believe the Currens also lived in the RC parish of Borris.
This is a follow up to the Mary Quinn Doyle posting re
Quinn, continuing Research on Quinns in the Ballinagree area of Borris.
Peter Quinn was baptized 12/1810 in RC Church, Borris,
the son of Terence Quinn and Mary Byrne. His brother Michael was
baptized there in 1813. John Quinn was baptized in 1812, the son of Paul
Quinn and Catherine (maiden name unknown). The other Quinns noted in
Mary's posting may have been cousins or brothers.
In 1825. Terence, Paul and Michael Quinn are listed
(in the Tithes Applottment) as farming in Borris. However, by 1857 (In
Griffiths Valuation), the only remaining Quinn is Paul, and it appears
that the three farms had been consolidated into one holding. At that
time, the land was being leased to them by Kavanaugh, but it later
passed into possession of John Neill, and is now largely owned by his
son Arthur.
Several Quinn's emigrated to Canada, and settled in
the St. Anicet area near Three Rivers, Quebec. The emigration appears to
have been in concert with emigration to the same area by a family from
Borris named Curren (Currin, Curran). James Curren was Godfather to
Peter Quinn, and he (or possibly a son) died in St. Anicet in 1878, aged
80 years. I believe all of these people emigrated between 1820 and 1830.
If anyone has any additional information on either of
these families, I would love to hear from you.

Terence Quinn and Mary Burn (Byrne) were Roman
Catholics. I believe that they had five sons (Peter. Michael, Thomas,
Terence, John) who would have been born approximately around the
1800-1820 timeframe in County Carlow. All these sons eventually ended up
in the Saint-Anicet
- area of Quebec, Canada. Their estimated time of
arrival in Quebec began as early as 1832 in the land records that I was
able to locate. My great-grandfather, Peter Quinn, the son of Terence
Quinn and
- Mary Burn (Byrne), was born in County Carlow around
1810-1811. He was married in Quebec in 1846. On his marriage certificate
it stated that both of his parents, Terence Quinn and Mary Burn, were
deceased by the time of his marriage in 1846. Can anyone please suggest
any advice for
- me about how I could proceed to find out where in
County Carlow these Quinns were from? So many people have told me that
"Quinn" is such a common name but I haven't been able to locate anyone
researching Quinns in County Carlow. Are there any Quinns out there or
anyone interested in Quinns????? I would love to hear from you! Thanks.

Roach |
- I'm splashing around in the same
pond in the same time period. My interest is Eamon (Edmund/Edward) Roach
b. 23 12 1795 in Borris to James Roach and Mary Fogarty. But, in
tracking him, I have come up with limited info on Doyle and Doran. Some
of these people ended up in NF and their descendants migrated to the US.
John Roche of Knockroe? m Mary Maher of Rahanna 10 2 1825. Witnesses
were Edward (Ned) Clooney & MARY DORAN (Philip Doran's wife???). There
were several Morans - could they be Dorans??? Poor handwriting???
Bridget. James, etc.
In any event, an Edward Roche m Bridget M(D)oran 16 11 1797. Witnesses
were James M(D)oran and James Carty.
One of their children Margaret Roche bapt. 2 4 1803 and sponsored by
Bryan Cannon & Judith DOYLE.
Those families are all in a muddle...lots of intermarriage.

St. John's Gazette).
- He May HAVE married (1) MARGARET
BYRNE Abt. 1813 in St. Mary's/St. Mullins, Cos Carlow & Wexford.
Secondly, he did marry (2) CATHERINE MAHER 07 Feb 1829 , RC Basilica,
St. John's, NF. She was born abt. 1805, Borrisoleigh, Co. Tipperary,
and died 04 May 1885 in St. John's, NF.
- The name may also have been
rendered Eamon Roch, but both the Carlow Genealogy Centre and a
private researcher spelled it (Anglicized) as Edmond/Edward Roach,
baptized 22 or 23 Dec, 1795 in Borris, Co Carlow.
- Edward arrived in NF in 1823. We
have now located a family there and it is possible he may have been
married (three children) before coming to NF (a widower). The specific
information on his possible family in Borris/St.Mullin's/St. Mary's -
where the Diocese of Leighlan-Kildare spans the borders of both
Counties:
- Edward Roach m. Margaret Byrne
(related to Elinor, James or John Byrne [sponsors] above?). Children:
- 1. Mary Ann bapt 2 June 1814 - Sp:
Patrick Mullow(n)ey & Bridget Garvy
- 2. John born 13 January - bapt 22
Jan 1817 - Sp: Joanna Byrne & Mary Roache
- 3. Ann bapt 28 June 1821...AND here
the records end!!!
- Was this a first marriage for
Edward? While Borris-St Mullins-St Mary's overlap Carlow/Wexford in
the Diocese (Leighlin-Kildare), they are missing records 1810-12 and
1814-20. Parish boundaries have blurred with the passage of time and
now seem to include St Mary's as part of St Mullin's Parish as well.
In Film 4169 of the NLI for Borris, there is a gap from 1814-25 for
St. Mullins.
- In NF, (widowed or not) Edward F.
Roach, Borris, Co. Carlow & Catherine Maher, Borrisoleigh, Co.
Tipperary m. 7 Feb 1829 Wit: William Quinn & Mary Allen --- Children:
- a. Mary Roach (c. 16 Jan 1830) Sp:

James Long & Bridget Doheny RCBSJ
- f. Edward (c. 16 Jan 1845) Sp:
Michael Phelan (Whelan) & Mary Hanrahan RCBSJ
- Edward F Roach worked for the
Governors for 45 years, according to his obituary. Illiterate, but a
yeoman (landowner), he did well to get the job of gate keeper -
security - at Government House. His Obit:
- Roach, Edward, native of Co.
Carlow, d. aged 85; here 56 yrs; servant of government for 45 yrs; at
res. 97 King's Rd., St John's. Feb 18/79E
- The male line has died out in NF
and Canada - over a few generations. The question is, did any of the
brothers - there or elsewhere in the world - produce sons (with males
still among us) - of that or those two lines? That would be:
- 1. Patt b 21 7 1786 - Sponsors
Edmond Phelan (Whelan) and Catherine Dwyer.
- 3. Philip (twin) b 18 4 1788 -
Sponsors James Butler and Elinor Byrne.
- 4. James b 20 7 1789 - Sponsors
James Byrne and Mary Rute (likely Rupe?).
- 7. Thomas b 14 12 1802 - Sponsors
Matthew Owens and Anne Roache
- and, if Edward m. Margaret Byrne -
does John have surviving offspring - 2. John b 13 January - bapt 22
Jan 1817 - Sp: Joanna Byrne & Mary Roache ?
- Fingers crossed. Happy hunting :-)

RUSSELL |
- Elizabeth RUSSELL born abt 1805
married 11 Oct Dublin, Ireland to Charles BAILE b 1803. Charles was
Coachman in the household of Elizabeth's father and he disinherited
her. A number of attempts to find Elizabeth's ancestors have ended in
failure. The family tale said that he was a "Lord" Russell which I
suspect is embroidery of the passing years but it may have hampered the
efforts to find him.
I would expect that he was a landlord of sufficient means to hire a
Coachman. I would guess that in hiring a Coachman, Russell senior would
not have gone far, including the possibility of the son of one of his
own tenants. Charles BAILE'S father, William BAILE was born in 1763 in
Laney, Co Carlow, and died 1848 in Clonegal, Ireland. I have only
Fidelia for his mother's name, no surname. Charles had siblings as
follows:
James b abt 1792
John b abt 1793
Thomas b abt 1794
George b abt 1796
Benjamin b 16 Mar 1797 Clonegal, Co Carlow, d 12 Mar 1885 Junetown,
Ontario, Canada
[Charles]
William b 10 May 1804
Barbara b 1807
Does anyone know a Russell family near Clonegal that might fit this
description who possibly had a daughter Elizabeth, born about
1804-1806?

Mary Bell of Minaughrim near Clonegal. The Sterne families were
protestant and closely associated with St. Fiaac's church in Clonegal.
I would like to find anything about Charles but particularly his
marriage to Mary and probably his death between 1818 and 1838.
- Many thanks for any information.

Travers
|
- Hello
everyone; the above lady Mary Ann Travers was born 1832 in Carlow.
That is all I know of her in Ireland. She married Patrick Connolly in
Sydney Australia in 1849. They are my great grandparents. They were
living in Victoria when Patrick died but can't find anything about Mary
Ann in Ireland. Maybe she came out with the Irish Bounty girls. or better
still she may have swam out from Ireland. Does anyone know the name
Travers in Carlow. I'll be waiting.

Right now I am beating the bushes to find out anything I
can about Tullow, Carlow. Carol, do you have any BMD dates for your
people? Are your folks Protestant or RC? Did they emigrate to the US, and
where? I have Michael Walsh, b. November 1871, on US documents and
he may be the one listed in the GRO from Tullow, Carlow. At least he is
the only one who has the right parents in the right time frame. Parents:
Patrick Walsh and Bridget Brien [O'Brien]. He immigrated to the US in
1890. Joined my grandfather, James Rattigan, in his small business of
paving the streets with cobblestones in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey.
Was one of two boarders in my grandparents' household. And when Jim
Rattigan suffered a long, agonizing illness his friend and crew member
Michael Walsh stepped in to help raise the 3 [surviving] Rattigan
children. A year after the funeral, he and my grandmother married. He was
the only father Jim Rattigan's children remembered. This Michael
Walsh also has the traditional Irish Naming Pattern for three generations:
his father was Patrick. He is a Michael. His only child with my
grandmother was also a Patrick. This Michael Walsh was an important member
of our family. I haven't even mentioned that my grandmother's maiden
name was Sarah Walsh from Tipperary Town, County Tipperary. No blood kin
to this Michael Walsh, of course. And I don't intend to tell you all the
other family complications--like all the males in my grandmother's family
in Tipperary Town were named "Michael Walsh." Argh-argh-ar!!! >Gr< Any response appreciated.

- I thought I'd resubmit the following in the hope that
someone may be able to help. My gt. grandmother was Margaret WALSH
daughter of Edmond and Mary WALSH (nee Toole or O'Toole).
- Mary and Edmond were residing at Pike which I have
since learned is a pub. My gt. grandmother Margaret (their daughter)
worked as a publican when she emigrated to New Zealand so I'm assuming
that her parents - Edmond and Mary WALSH ran the Pike pub.
- Mary had a sister Ellen TOOLE (O'TOOLE) who married
Patrick Prendergast around 1830's. They had the following children that
I know off - Mary (nun), Agnes (nun) Charles, Francis, Anne, Barbara.
They resided at Duke St, Athy and had a saddlery business

Watchorn & Hawkin |
- My wife's family is descended from
Watchorns and Hawkins.
Henry Watchorn born 1821 in Carlow married Nancy Taylor, born 1827 in
Armagh. They married, settled and died in Lanark County, Ontario,
Canada.
Their son Albert married Catherine Ann Hawkins. I think that her
grandparents were also from Ireland.
Any connection? I have quite a lot of information on this line. My
mother-in-law's maiden name is Watchorn.

Walsh, O'Brien |
- Need
advice. Searching for Michael Walsh, b. November 1871. Parents: Patrick
Walsh and Bridget O'Brien. Found only one Michael Walsh in the GRO in the
right time frame with the right parents. From Tullow, County Carlow.
Have done more research. Civil Parish=Tullowphelim. RC Parish=Tullow.
Church in town of Tullow=Most Holy Rosary.
But with such common Given and Surnames, how can I verify and
cross-reference that he is mine? I have him on a few U.S. documents but
none give his Place of Origin in Ireland.
When my grandmother died, this Michael Walsh just disappeared. Any ideas
for further research? Or . . .. does this man fit into your family?

WALSH |
Could anyone help me with the whereabouts of 'The
Pike'. My gt.gt grandparents Edmund & Mary WALSH (nee (O) Toole) were
married at St Johns Parish, Kilkenny 27th January 1834. The Parish
Records state Husbands & Wife's residence as 'The Pike'. Looking at
their children's baptisms also at St Johns Parish it give the residence
at John/Upper John Street. I thought that The Pike was a pub but on
reading through the Griffiths Valuation for Kilkenny there are a number
of people who under Townlands share the same "The Pike". In the
Griffiths Valuation it says: Edmund WALSH, Parish: Donaghmore Location:
Ballyragget / The Pike.
