FARRELL/KAVANAGH
|
- My
great grandfather, Michael Farrell, had arrived in Saint John, New
Brunswick, Canada by 1815. His marriage certificate in 1820 listed his
parents as Edward Farrell and Mary Kavanagh living in County Carlow.
Census and death records suggest that Michael was born between January and
June of 1783. Recently, I have been told there were Farrell's and
Kavanaghs living in St. Mullins at that time and have searched the Borris
Church records but did not find Michael's parents. I would be interested
in hearing from anyone who would have some suggestions as to where I might
look now. Thank you. Doris (Farrell) Lapointe

Fennell
|
- Henry
Fennell (b. ca 1838) and Dorcas Jones (b. ca 1842) - both born possibly in
Holdenstown Balt, Wicklow, Ireland - married 09 22 1863 in Baltinglass,
Wicklow, Ireland; had the following children: William (b. 1864), Anna (b.
1866), Robert (b. 1868), Elizabeth (b. 1870), Sarah (b. 1873), Joseph (b.
1876), Adah (b. 1880), Dorcas (b. 1884), Rhoda (b. 1886), and Henry (b.
1890). These children were reared in Rathvilly, CARLOW, Ireland. Most
moved to the USA by the very early 1900s.
Elizabeth "Bessie" stayed in Ireland and married --- Salter; Henry married
(I don't know her name) and moved to Australia, moving on to the USA after
his wife's death, probably in the early 1970s. Henry and Dorcas were
my husband's great grandparents; their daughter Dorcas ("Doris") was my
husband's grandmother. The family here in the USA counted Rathvilly,
County Carlow, Ireland as their "ancestral
home."
Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.

Fenlon / Fenelon
|
I am looking for Fenlons. I have Garrett (Gerald)
Fenelon born in 1786 married to Margaret Caulfield. I know of three
children but believe they had nine - my grandfather was said to be the
youngest of nine. The three I know of are Margaret, Patrick (b. 1819)
& my ggrandfather
Thomas (b.1836). Thomas married Mary Jane Redmond
and they had twelve children. I have some information about them but
would like to know of Patrick's family also or any of the missing nine
siblings! Thanks very much.

Farrell
|
- Hello all, I am researching Thomas Farrell, born 23
Dec. 1810 County Carlow (according to his tombstone in
Pittsuburgh, Pennsylvania, USA) and died 13 Feb. 1886. He came through
the port of Phildadelphia in May 1846 with his wife, Ann Ryan, born
June, 1811 in Carlow or Cork. She died in PA in 1853. They brought
over a large family: Johanna, b. 1832; Mary, b.1836; James b. 1837;
John, b. 1839; Catherine, b.1842; Thomas, b. 1843---died on the ship;
Joseph, b. 1844. They settled in Pittsburgh, PA and Wheeling, WV and
had more children, many of whom survived. We are descended from the
line of James, b. 1837. James' son, Thomas Patrick was a policeman
killed in the line of duty in 1918 and is honored on the national and
Pittsburgh memorials. We only recently discovered the tombstones in
Pittsburgh and therefore made the Carlow connection. I have not
yet been able to place this family in Carlow. But I have not
thoroughly searched the new postings. I do have the ship's passenger
list for this family in 1846 and am now transcribing some other ships
with Irish passengers on the same microfilm. It is slow going because
it is so hard to read. I intend to post these lists for all to see
soon. Happy hunting to all! Rita Farrell

John first came to Canada in 1828, went back and forth several times until
he could bring all of the family over. Family lore is he was a "hedgemaster"
who taught the Irish children behind the hedges as it was against British
law for Irish children to attend school. Their children:

GALLAGHER after 1844 in NB.
MARY b. Dec 1827 Ireland.

Fredericton, NB. Married JAMES ABRAM.
JOHN b. 16 Jun 1833 Ireland, d. 19 May 1924 Newmarket, York, NB. Married
MARY HOSFORD 5 May 1866 Fredericton, NB, Canada.

have lots of descendants of John Owen to share with whoever is interested.
Look forward to hearing from any interested parties.

FERNSBY
|
-
I am looking for anything to do with the surname FERNSBY. This surname has
been spelled variously as FERNSBY, FERNSLY, FERNSLEY, FIRNSBY etc, FEMOLY
and any other strange spelling that comes to mind.
I have Richard Fernsby b 1804 in County Carlow who enlisted in 16th
Lancers in 1823 (became 17th Lancers months later). He was in and out of
Ireland, Scotland and England during his military career from 1823-1848
when he became a Chelsea Pensioner.
I have found an Edward Fernsby in the Griffith Valuation who held property
in Dublin Street, Carlow Town, Carlow County.
There is an Edward James Fernsby who died in Liverpool, England during
September Q of 1844.
There is also a George Fernsby b abt 1805 who enlisted in 98th Foot and
was in Cardiff, Glamorgan Co, Wales during the time of his son's, George
Dolan Fernsby, birth before August 1832 . George's wife was Mary. I am
told that it was most probable that George Fernsby was there with the 98th
Foot to manage the Merthyr riots. This family are not in Wales in 1841.
It is more than likely, given the scarcity of appearances of this name,
that these three were brothers or, at least, related.
Richard Fernsby married Catharine Ellison in St Paul's, Dublin on 2 May
1830 and all his children were born in London.
Any information on the family name of Fernsby would be welcome. Any
assistance with recovering information about the marriage in St Paul's
would also be most welcome.
Thanks

FITZHENRY
|
- Hi Lister
- My ancestors were James Andrew Dobbin FITZHENRY and
Frances FITZHENRY. They are mentioned as applying for a Marriage
Licence in 1838. Reference Microfilm No. 0100870 - Ossory, Ferns and
Leighlin Diocese (A - J) 1691-1845
- (Although the films say Diocese of Ossory, they
include licenses for Ferns and Leighlin also. These three dioceses
were united and were often referred to collectively as the Diocese of
Ossory.) (Source LDS Family History Library Catalog).
- Even though this family seems to have lived and
worked in Ballickmoyler Queens County, I have added their surname to
this Roll-Call, as maybe they attended church and school in Carlow.
They had seven children. Frances, Maria, Daniel, Samuel, Susan, James
and Henrietta. All children, except Henrietta who died in 1867,
immigrated to Australia in the early 1880's.

married Eleanor Coady in 1850 and had five to six children
- John Coday Flood, Peter Flood, Miles Flood, Ellen
Flood, Edward Fitzgerald Flood and Catherine Josephine Flood born
between 1851 and 1868. Think Edward's father was John Flood a boat
builder in Graiguecullen. Need to know John Flood's wife, other

Coday Flood and another Flood boy and Daniel Coady all attended St.
Peter's College in Carlow with all the boys going on the Queens
College Galway and Edward Flood finishing his education in Dublin at
Catholic University. Ellen Flood entered the convent and died in 1920

- I have minimal information, but am putting it here,

- My great-grandmother Catherine FOLEY RYAN (b. 1848)
may have been from County Carlow. Her father was Michael FOLEY.
Catherine married Patrick RYAN from Tipperary. They immigrated to
the US about 1875 and are in the Chicago Illinois census of 1880.
I know from my mother that there was a Carlow connection because her
family dogs were named Carlow. Also, my mother said there were
NOLAN cousins in her family.

HUNT |
I have been heavily involved in researching my family history for
several years and know that my great great great grandfather lived in
Ballyroughan, County Carlow from the late 1700s. He and two other
Hunt families still lived there in 1827 as they show up in the Tithe
Applotment records and they were also on the County Carlow 1831 Tithe
Defaulters List. However, the name Hunt was gone from Ballyroughan
when Griffiths Valuations were recorded. I am hoping that I may find
someone through your mailing list who can unravel some of the mystery.

Searching for Hacketts in and around Bagnalstown in

whereabouts of his parents, Patrick Hackett and Mary Doyle, unknown
after 1875. Also unknown are the fate of sister Bridget and brothers

found in records after 1900. There are no Hacketts in the region

Wisconsin USA.
HARRIS, Thomas George (b.c.1783)-British army officer in Ireland-Anglican
m. Margaret PAYNE (b.c. 1789)-daughter of Irish Quaker family Margaret had
an older sister Mary and her mother was likely a MACASSEY children George,

Caroline, Edward b. between 1810 and 1835
Richard HARRIS (1822-1863) m. Rachel MACASSEY (1822-1908). Rachel's father
was probably John from Bagenalstown and paternal grandmother was of the
MALONEs from Ballybrummel. Richard and Rachel had sons George, Daniel,

Still looking for my Grandparents James Little and
Patricia Henly or Hendy - now been looking for two years ?????? Am at
the brick wall !!!
I have found numerous members of the family, thanks
to a lot of help, but not my immediate family. My father also James
Little was born in 1913 in Ballyloo House, Ballyloo, County Carlow.
Any help would indeed be greatly appreciated as
options appear to be running out at the moment.

HOLDEN
|
- My Holdens come from the Old
Leighlin area of County Carlow. My great grandmother was Bridget Holden
(b. July 1831), the eldest child of John Holden and Mary Lynch of the
townland of Lackan. John and Mary were married in Paulstown Catholic
Church (Co. Kilkenny) in January 1830.
The other children of the marriage (after Bridget) were, in order of
birth: Ellen (b.1833), Catherine (b.1836), Martin (b.1842), William (b.
1845), Mary (b.1849) and John (b. 1851). All of the children were
baptised in the Leighlinbridge Catholic Church. Given the gaps between
some of the children there may have been others, but these are the only
children of John and Mary that can be found in the baptism registers.
Bridget Holden came to Australia as an assisted immigrant in 1854 and
married Thomas Walsh (from Co. Limerick) in 1857. The rest of the
Holdens seem to have left the Old Leighlin area around 1870 because
there are no records relating to them in the parish registers after that
date. Trying to find out what happened to them.

HAUGHNEY
|
- My gg grandfather was Patrick
HAUGHNEY who came from Ireland to the USA in 1866. I have, but not
proven, his parents as John and Mary (BRADLEY) HAUGHNEY, and the
following siblings: Dennis, James, Edward, Thomas, Michael, John, Mary,
and Ella.
I'm hoping I might find someone in Ireland who is working on these
families,
or at least know someone by those names, that would be willing to share
information. I have a fair amount from the USA, but nothing from
Patrick's
homeland.

HENNESSY
|
HENNESSY (plus variant spellings)
Comment: My gg-grandfather was JOHN HENNESSY, born
c1838 Co Carlow. His father was PATRICK HENNESSY, farmer, Co. Carlow.
He would have been born no later than about 1816. John went to
Liverpool. In the 1861 census John and his brother (I presume) JAMES,
b c1836, were boarding together in Liverpool.
I can find no records that fit for their father
Patrick living in Liverpool so it is likely the sons emigrated without
him in the late 1850s/early 1860s. I don't know who Patrick married.
He was dead in 1861 when John married my gg-grandmother in Liverpool
(Catherine Connor). John and Catherine had 9 children and I have much
family information from here on.
I note: - there is a Patrick Hennessey (b c1813
Bagnalstown) who married ELEANORA BOLGER (b c1818) in 1838 but don't
know if this is the right person even though the dates fit.
- there is also a Patrick Hennessy, occupant and
lessor of house, office and land in Ratrhrush Parish as recorded in
the Griffiths Valuation for Carlow 1848-1864. - I have also found a
Patrick Hennessy who died in Carlow in 1865 aged 83...possible the
father of 'my' Patrick?
I would love information about these Patricks or
any other, their family etc in Co Carlow, if anyone can help.
Many thanks,
Marilyn (New Zealand)

- HENNESSY/BROHAN
|
I know there are several alternative for the Brohan
surname but I have never come across Bracken/Brucken before.
These are my Brahans - did you come across any of them in your
research? As far as I can tell they moved to England sometime
after 1851. The family settled in Wolstanton - Staffordshire and my
first sighting of them was on the 1861 census where they were listed
under the name BRAHAN as follows.
John b1791 Carlow
Bridget b1806 Kilterbury (Ancestry) Killenbury (The
Genealogist) Kilkerley (1837.com)
John b1826 Carlow
Nicholas b1830 Carlow
Nissey b1836 Carlow (full name Anastasia)
Catherine b1838 Carlow
Bridget b1841 Carlow
Eliza b1843 Carlow (full name Elizabeth)
- In 1871 they are under the name BRAHAN again but on
all BMD certs and subsequent census they are BROUGHAM. Their year of
birth on the census and BMD's varied wildly. I believe there are
several alternatives for Brahan/Brohan and that Brougham is the anglised
version of the name.
In 1874 my gg grandmother Elizabeth Brougham married Martin Duffy (also
from Ireland but no idea where) and a few years later the family moved
up north to Grangetown near Middlesbrough where the Duffy's remain to
this day remain to this day. John and Bridget senior died in Wolstanton,
and Catherine, Nissey and Nicholas did not marry - not yet discovered
what became of John jr. The name Brohan is spelled also as
Broughan, Bracken, Brucken - take your pick.

Hickey / Ronan
|
-
Looking for any info on:
- Elizabeth Hickey born Carlow or
possibly Wicklow on 15 May 1856. Her mother was Elizabeth Fox and father
was Thomas Hickey (brother of John Hickey who married Catherine Kehoe
and had several children in Clonegal parish - living in Kilbride).
- While in Co. Carlow, she married
Thomas J. Ronan from Wexford? Wicklow? Carlow? They had at
least 2 children before leaving Ireland for Chicago:
- Catherine (Cate) Ronan born 22
February 1875
- Thomas J. Ronan Jr. born 26 May 1876
- They had a 3rd child - either while
still in Ireland or after migrating to Chicago.
- John F. Ronan born 29 March 1880
- John Hickey (birth date/place
unknown) and wife Catherine Kehoe (birth date/place unknown) had 3 children
who were born and baptised in Clonegal Parish - living in Kilbride.
- Elizabeth - 9 February 1837
- Elizabeth - 30 September 1838
- Catherine - 25 December 1842
- The fourth child ,Sarah my
great-grandmother, was not recorded in the Clonegal church
book, nor in any other Co. Carlow parish according to the Carlow Heritage
office in 2001. Yet her US papers all show that she was born in County Carlow.
- Sarah - 26 January 1855
- Any info would be very much
appreciated.

HENNESSY/BROHAN
-
ANY SPELLING
|
- Greetings all,
- Several years ago we were able to
trace some of our Hennessy/Brohan ancestors in Leighlinbridge. The
surname Hennessy is spelled in the usual various ways and the name
Brohan is spelled also as Broughan, Bracken, Brucken - take your pick.
- We have a needlepoint within the
family sewn in 1847 by "Mary Hennessy - Leighlinbridge"
- and we have a New York City death
certificate which states "Carlow" rather than the usual "Ireland". Mary
did indeed go to school in Leighlinbridge but she was born in
Ballyknockin, a townland within the Leighlin parish.
- Mary's parents were James Hennessy
and Mary Brohan and we believe James may have deceased young and Mary
took her family to Leighlinbridge - this is not proven. Mary Brohan had
two sisters, Catherine and Ann who emigrated to New York City. Mary
Brohan Hennessy also made her way to New York City and is found living
with her daughter, Mary, who married Michael Connor in Manhattan, New
York City and they raised their family in Manhattan.
- There was a family of Hennessy
surname where the boys exited the school system circa 1852. From the
school records we learned that a James Hennessy from Ballyknockin exited
the system - no date or reason given.
- In the 1810 List of able bodied men
in Leighlinbridge, there are three male Hennessys -
- Thomas Henesy Artisan, Patrick Henesy
Shopkeeper, and James Henesy Artisan.
- In Book 2, 1827-1844 Church Records,
there is a James Hennessy married to Mary Brohan and they had 8 children
born between 1828 and 1845 - their residence is given as Ballyknocken
but they were not married in that parish. I have the names, dates and
sponsors for all of these children.
- Our Mary who sewed the needlepoint
married Michael Connor/O'Connor in either Ireland or New York City. He
was a stone mason but his origin is unknown. One wonders if the
above occupation of "artisan" might have some meaning to a craft -
perhaps masonry - and perhaps Michael and Mary knew each other in
Ireland.
- We were able to get the above
information with the kind help of the parish priest at St. Laserian's
shortly before he deceased and through the kind direction of Michael
Purcell who gave of his time and knowledge. We have always been grateful
for their interest and assistance to us.
- If anyone is researching these names
I would be so grateful to hear - I will be happy to share what we have
acquired. This is a long message and I apologize for that. Thanks to all
who take the time to read this.
-
- Best wishes to all, Donna McCormack

JACKSON
|
-
The furthest back I can go is to George
JACKSON (1718-1782) of whom it was said:
- "The ancestor of this family came from
Co. York in Cromwell's army and was granted lands in Co. Carlow for his
services. This estate called Mount Leinster was sold in 1745 by his
descendant, George Jackson who settled at Urker, Crossmaglen, Co. Armagh."
I have no record of this sale (and have looked in the Deeds Registry for
it).
- Another story is:
- "The Jackson's came from
Northamptonshire and went to Ireland in Elizabeth's reign, and were
given grants of land in Co. Carlow (N. Leinster) for distinguished service
in the Army.
- "George Jackson lost all his property
-he went over to Bath and became engaged to an English lady, the daughter
of an earl, who refused to live in Ireland. He returned to raise money by
selling his life interest in the property, and then found that the lady
had jilted him and married another.
- He went to France and squandered all his
fortune. He then returned to Ireland and was glad to get the post of
school-master in the Charter School, Creggan, Co. Armagh" A third version
is that both stories were true. They came over in Elizabeth's time, the
lands were frittered away, came back in Cromwell's time - who knows.
Gambling and drink seem to part of the fabric of my family tale and the
name of either John JACKSON or Thomas JACKSON are the most likely
culprits.
- Borris is another name that crops up in
the family tales. I am working my way through what I have and hope to
piece it together. Unfortunately, a wife in the early 1800s got furious
with her husband crying in his beer over the JACKSON family glory days and
threw the deeds into the fire. While it may have served him right, it has
left me with something of a more complicated challenge.
- There we have it. I will be posting more
deeds to my web site over the next few months as I start to close in
on this.

- My research concerns a Denis/Dennis JORDAN (b c1808
Ballon Carlow County, d 1895 Newcastle Australia) who married Sarah
BRENNAN (b c1816 County Wicklow, d 1906 Newcastle Australia). Then
married on 10 January 1837 in Carlow County. They moved to England
for several years before immigrating to Australia in 1842. Research
shows that they had about 17 children which included 1 set of triplets
and 1 or 2 sets of twins. Any information is most welcome.

I am hoping you may be of help.
I am trying to find the name JOBE in Ireland. The county is unknown.
I have a Samuel JOBE born abt 1828 to a Samuel JOBE.
The information comes from Samuel (son) marriage certificate in Newcastle,
England in 1857.
If you do have any JOBE surnames it would at least give me a county to
start my research.
