Kavanagh	Hello Listers - We believe our Ireland to US emigrant, Margaret Kavanagh was born in County Carlow c.1837. Her brother was James Kavanagh, said to have been born in Co.Wexford. (He died in Chicago, Illinois, US 1908 married to Margaret Byrne of the Ballinguile, Co.Wicklow Byrne family). Margaret Kavanagh of Co.Carlow became a Sister of Mercy in Providence, Rhode Island, US in 1862 and died in Connecticut in 1907. Does anyone have siblings Margaret Kavanagh and James Kavanagh (both born in 1830's) as relatives? Especially interested in hearing from others who have a connection to The Carlow Town Sisters of Mercy, established there by 1845. Want to know: did Sisters ever travel together to America, for example, at famine time? Kerfoot and Smith	These are my G.G.G.G. Grandparents. George Kerfoot born ? married ?? died 1819 in Ottawa area just after emigrating. John Smith married Mary Warner. Would like to learn who George married I have one source says that his wife was Eleanor with no surname. Also would like to know if he had any brothers or sisters. Also don't know for sure who his parents were and anything about them. Both these families came from Coolcullen just across the border in Kilkenny from Carlow I know the Smith's at one time lived in Carlow. Just not sure were. KEHOE & CURRAN	I am searching for the ancestors of Thomas CURRAN and Ellen KEHOE from Marley (aka Knockduff), Co. Carlow. Our ancestor is their daughter, Ellen Mary CURRAN (born 1874) who went from Queenstown to San Francisco, CA via NY in 1895. Ellen Kehoe's parents were John KEHOE and Elizabeth MARTIN. She married in San Francisco to Edmond ANGLIM of Co. Tipperary. I have Thomas' baptismal record (1837) from St. Mullin's Church which says that his parents were Michael CURRAN and Eliza BURKE. Templeton, Quebec, daughter of Thomas CLEAR and Mary NOWLAN (NOLAN) of Kilconnor, Co. Carlow. John and Johanna were married July 01, 1858 in St. Andrews R.C. Church, Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow. KEAUGHRAN	Dates: about 1800 to 1853 County Carlow - Margaret Keaughran (aka Keoghan), born 1833 in County Carlow, arrived at Fremantle, Western Australia, aboard the ship “Mermaid” from Portsmouth, England, on 13 May 1851; the ship carried 208 convicts and 29 pensioner guards and their families. Edward Keaughran (born about 1800), a private in the 2nd Royal Artillery, was a pensioner guard and his wife Eliza (born about 1801) and children Margaret, Thomas James (born 1838), Ellen Jane (born 1845) and Mary Ann (born 1847) were on the ship. Thomas James Keaughran and brother Edward Francis (born about 1838) were probably born in Malta when Edward and Eliza Keaughran were stationed there. KELLY	I am searching for the ancestors of Ellen Kelly b.1873 and her brother Bernard Kelly b.1877 who emigrated to New York c.1901. Their parents were Luke Kelly and Bridget Murphy and they lived in Borris, Co. Carlow. Ellen married John Haugh from Co. Clare in 1906. They had a son William Haugh who married Dorothy Corrigan, Their daughter Catherine Haugh married Arthur Westner. Bernard married Frances Mary Wells from Limerick in 1905. They had a son also called Bernard but he died in 1910. Bernard Kelly diedon 17 May, 1919 in New York. Ellen & Bernard had other siblings who stayed living in Ireland. They included: Martin Kelly b.1875 who married Bridget Clowry, Borris. Patrick Kelly b.1878 who married Annie Frances Doyle, Borris. Michael Kelly b.1883 who married Anne Kelly?, Borris. Luke Kelly b.1890 who married Bridget McDonald, Borris. Katherine Kelly b.1880 who married James Walsh. I would love to hear from any of the above families. The only reference I have to his native home is that his obituary was suppose to have been copied to the Carlow papers. Don't know if the obituary ever made it there. LAWLOR	Born in County Carlow about 1840, ? Tullow. Father James Lawlor, said to be a merchant on her death certificate. Mother Ann Tierney. Her sister Marian married Patrick Muldowney in the Catholic church in Tullow 18 September 1856. My great grandparents Annie and John Brophy from Rathmoon Co.Wicklow married about 1863 in Dublin but no record has been found. LAWLESS NEILE	Looking for information on Patrick Lawless and Winifred Neile, married 1823 in Drumfea, Co. Carlow. Winifred Neile was born ca. 1799 and died in Drumfea on 9 December 1878. Their son (my great-grandfather) Thomas Lawless of Drumfea married Margaret Troy of Rathnageeragh in 1873 (I have plenty of information on the Troy line). Only known information is as follows: JOHN LEMON was a jeweller that had a shop on 127 Tullow Street in Carlow and 6 Grafton St. in Dublin in 1820 -1850. He married a JANE ADAMS Dec. 23rd 1826 in "the Diocese of Ossry, Fern and Leiglin, Co. Carlow" Jane's father was John Adams who served in the British Army in 1800. In Sept. 1824 John Lemon brought charges against a Thomas McDonnell for assault (according to Court document dated Jan. 31st 1828. M[a]cDowell	M[a]cDowell. Robert Ephraim McDowell was a medical doctor who had a practice in Carlow between approx. 1877 and 1897. His various addresses were Carlow District Lunatic Asylum, 13 Dublin Street and Hanover Bridge and Bridewell Lane according to the Medical Directories and Griffiths Primary Valuation of Tenements - Carlow County. Meehan	I am looking for information on a John Meehan and a Margaret Maher whom he married on January 14,1787 in the parish of Leighinbridge. Witnesses were John Maher,John Byrne and Garret Byrne. His son James, who was a fisherman, and my g.g.g.g.grandfather, married a Margaret Mullins in Prospect ,Nova Scotia,Canada in 1825.How he arrived in Canada, whether he had any siblings, etc,is all unknown. MORRIS / LEVINGSTON	I just found out from my father-in-law that his father, John Joshua Morris was one of 9 siblings born to Francis Morris and Jane Levingston Morris. John Joshua Morris was born on March 27, 1887 in Co. Carlow. He emigrated to Canada and married Helen Stuart from Arklow, Co. Wicklow on June 4, 1921 in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Some of John's sibling were: Francis (male), Herbert, Fanny (possibly Francis?), and Samuel. We do know that Samuel Morris emigrated to Canada and lived in Saskatchewan. He was married to Gertie and they had at least on son named Bruce who married a Julie. In my searching through google, I did find a death notice for a Francis Morris who died on April 7th, 2003 in Co. Carlow at the age of 74. This could quite possibly have been my father-in-law's cousin. Any information would be helpful in breaking down my brick wall. MOLLOY / KEOGH	My grandfather Richard MOLLOY was born 4th July 1866 at Tiny Park in the parish of Ballyinacarrig. His parents were Richard MOLLOY and Mary KEOGH. There was an elder brother James Molloy (b. Hacketstown) who became a Sergeant in the RIC. Possibly a younger brother Henry, and a sister Eliza but no details known. Family tradition has it that Mary Keogh was related to Myles Keogh but I've never proved it! Be interested in any contact for MOLLOY in Carlow. Mooney/Maney	I am searching for information on the following family from Carlow. The gentlemen were James, John Joseph, and Thomas Mooney who I believe were related to my GGrandfather John Mooney from Cleveland Ohio. All three gentlemen came to Ohio between 1904 and 1910. On the ship manifest for all three it showed Bagnalstown as last place of residence and on one it listed James Mooney as his father.I was able to get a death certificate for Thomas and it has that James Mooney and Bridget Maney was his parent and place of birth was County Carlow Ireland. I was told that Mooney and Maney could be the same name just a different spelling. Would any one have the Griffiths for Bagnalstown or the 1900 census to see what information they might have on this family. My GGrandfather John Mooney returned to the U.S. with John Joseph after a visit to Ireland in 1910 and Bagnalstown Carlow was listed as last place of residence & James Mooney as John Joseph's father. If my GGrandfather was James brother then James would of been born in the 1840's because my GGrandfather was born abt. 1845 but I don't know where. I don't know if he was born in Carlow or James moved to Carlow after he got married. I don't know where to look to find this information. Please can any one shed some light on this for me. I have received My Great Grandfathers Naturalization Papers, death certificate, arrival from Ireland, information on all his children but nothing has where he came from or who his siblings were. His death certificate has John Mooney and it appears to be Elizabeth Wynne as his parents, but I cannot find anything on them. Civil or the Diocese in Ohio has nothing of their marriage. They had to be married in the U.S. because my GGrandfather John came over in 1867 and was single at the time. Catherine Brennan came over in 1866 or 1869. They were married on the 1870 Cleveland Census and Maggie Brennan age 19 was living with them, I just don't where else to look. MORAN (GORMORAN)	My Great X 3 Grandmother was Frances (Fanny) Moran. who was reportedly born in Ireland. (Fanny_ Gormoran) though there was no proof to substantiate this did people who went by the surname Gormoran eventually shorten this to Moran??. Fanny has been a mystery in our family as to where she was born in Ireland and who her parents were and siblings, but we have been searching for Moran's, should we have been looking for Gormoran's??? Though I don't know the location she left Ireland ca1845 and emigrated to St. John New Brunswick Canada where she married my Great X 3 Grandfather on January 10, 1847. I have traced them from 1847 onwards until Fanny's death on December 9 1901 in St. John NB. Canada. Any information on how to find out what part of Ireland the MORAN'S may have come from would be wonderful. MOONEY	My Great Grandfather was John Mooney b. abt 1845 and came to the U.S. in 1867. He married Catherine Brennan b abt. 1846 and she came to the U.S. 1866 or 1869. I can't find a record of them getting married in Cleveland where they lived but they were married as of the 1870 Cleveland Census and they had Maggie Brennan age 19 living with them. My GGrandfather came back from a visit to Ireland on 9-15-1910 with John Joseph Mooney who states that his father was James Mooney from Parknakyle Bagnalstown. My Great Grandfather has John Mooney and it looks like Ellizabeth Wynne on his death certificate but I can't find any siblings.My GGrandmother has Jno Brennan as her father but mother unknown on her death certificate. NOLAN, WEBSTER	Researching: WILLIAM (Born ca 1800) and VALINDA (WEBSTER) NOLAN (Born ca 1803) married on August 6, 1826 in St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Bagenalstown, County Carlow, Ireland. The witnesses at the wedding were Peter Cummins and Bridget Lyons. WILLIAM and VALINDA NOLAN's firstborn child, EDWARD was baptized in St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Bagenalstown, County Carlow, Ireland on July 10, 1827. His Godparents were GEORGE WEBSTER and ANNE NOLAN. WILLIAM and VALINDA immigrated to Montreal, Canada. In 1829. Second son, JOHN NOLAN, was born in Canada in 1829. Nolan / Noland	My ancestor Pierce Noland came from Ireland to Cecil Co. MD in 1677. He named his land in Maryland "Fethard." I realize there is Fethard in County Tipperary and Fethard-on-Sea. I feel that I am safe to theorize that he named his property for Fethard, the ancient walled city of County Tipperary. During the first week of August, my 27 yr. old married daughter and I spent two days and nights in County Carlow, the original ancestral home of the Nolan (d) family. We enjoyed our visit very much. We stayed at Green Lane Bed and Breakfast both nights. Our favorite sites were the Dolmen Stone and the Old Graves at the end of town. We also visited both Fethards. In Fethard in County Tipperary we stayed at the Gateway Bed and Breakfast by the only surviving gate of the ancient wall. To this day, the people there will not take a funeral procession out of town in the direction that Cromwell entered their town. I feel that Pierce Nolan(d)'s father probably had to surrender to Cromwell, and was probably one of the ones who chose Connaught over hell (the only two choices Cromwell gave them). It is said that Pierce Noland came from County Mayo to America, but I have no proof of this presently. I have many other Irish ancestors besides Nolan(d)s. Those are just my farthest back proven ones, and the only ones I am sure are from Carlow.	_{Doris Noland Parton}

Nolan	Looking for John Nolan, born April, 1857 in Cty Carlow. His father was John Nolan, b. Aug. 1822 also in Cty Carlow. John Sr. had 4 sons, John, James, William and Michael. His wife died when the boys were children. John Jr. came to upstate NY in 1876. His father and brothers followed and were all in NY by 1885. NOLAN	Knowing that there are lots of NOLAN descendants on the list, I thought I'd see if anyone recognizes this information: In the 1900 US census in Jersey City, NJ, Thomas Aughney is listed with his wife and children. Thomas was born in 1862 in Roscat, near Tullow, Co. Carlow, and came to the US in 1882. Listed with Thomas' family is ANNIE NOLAN, niece, b. Feb 1889, age 11, b. New Jersey, parents b. Ireland, attending school. Since Thomas' wife's name was Morrisy, I think that therefore Annie was probably the daughter of a sister of Thomas. He had 2 sisters that I know of, but I do not know anything beyond their baptism date; Mary Aughney, b. 1860, and Joanna, b. 1857, both in Roscat. There was a Joanna Aughney on the passenger list of the SS Batavia, arrived NY 8 July 1872, age 17, spinster, from Ireland to U.S., Steerage. Since Aughney is not a common name and the age is close, I suspect this is Thomas's sister, but I have not found any record of her in the US. A brother of Thomas Aughney was Joseph, and I believe it was he who was listed on the passenger list of the SS Commonwealth, Queenstown to Boston, May 1902; Joseph Aughney, age 35, single, farmer, Irish, last residence Roscat, destination Madison, Wisconsin, going to MICHAEL NOLAN, 620 West Wash Avenue, Madison, Wisconsin; sponsor Uncle Mike Nolan. I did find a Michael Nolan in Madison, Wisconsin in the 1910 US census but he was a widower so no wife's name was given. The census information was that he was age 72, b. Ireland, immigrated 1864, and had children living with him - Henry T. age 24, Nellie age 21 and Elizabeth age 12, all born in Wisconsin. I could not find him in the 1900 census. These Aughney siblings' parents were Michael Aughney & Catherine McDonald, so why was Michael NOLAN listed as Joseph's Uncle? I believe it is the same Joseph Aughney who sailed on the SS Caronia, from Queenstown, arrived New York City 27 Sep 1905, age 40, male, single, Labr., last residence Tullow, destination New York, previously in U.S.; to join Brother Thomas Aughney, 265 Monmouth St., New York [should be New Jersey]. SO. does anyone have in their records a NOLAN who married an AUGHNEY? Or does anyone recognize ANNIE NOLAN or MICHAEL NOLAN? Nolan	So many Nolan's......surely someone can connect to mine? Mathew Nolan was born probably in 1830's. He and his sister, Julia Mary Nolan born August 09, 1841 were both born in Tullow, County Carlow. At some point in time prior to 1853, they were in New Jersey where Mathew married Mary Ann Norris and they had the first 3 of 7 children: Daniel, Thomas Martin, Mary Catharine, John Peter, Julia Mary, Mary Elizabeth (Mamie), and Mathew Martin. At some point in time prior to 1861, they arrived in New Orleans where Mathew's last 4 children were born. The 1870 census does not have the first 3 children living with them (assuming they died young?). In 1876, Julia Mary Nolan (Mathew's sister) married Michael Spellman and had 2 children (Mary Ellen and John Peter). Love how they carried names over. Around 1872, Mathew "deserted his family" and is a brick wall at this point. Mary Ann, his wife, died the following year and the 4 children were put in an orphanage (unable to find which one at this point), but John and Julia were in the 1880 census with their aunt Julia and Uncle Michael. Have found a Nolan relative with the old family bible, but no mention of deaths on the 3 older children, just their births. No one seems to know what happened to Mathew. Possibility of a Miller connection in New Jersey....have 2 letters written to Julia Mary Nolan Spellman dated 1868 and 1869 that were written by a "Nellie Miller" (poss. Mary Ellen) and she mentions here brother Will and sister Abbie. They lived in Jersey City on Henderson St. and ran a boarding house. Any help to anyone?	_{Lisa Cotten}

Nolan	My Nolan's are a brother and sister: Julia Mary Nolan was born August 09, 1841. Her brother, Mathew Nolan was born Bet. 1834 - 1844. Family members have a Bible that gives Mathew's line, but there was no mention of Julia (found the connection through the Census when 2 of his children were living with her and her husband). No DOB or DOD is listed for him and conflict with Census and marriage date in bible puts his DOB probably in the years listed above. Mathew married Mary Ann Norris in New Jersey and I've been unable to find them in Census there. First time I find either Mathew or Julia is in the 1870 Census of Algiers, Orleans Parish, Louisiana. They had 3 children born in NJ that I "assume" died young as I do not find them in LA and then had 4 more children in LA. In 1872, Mary died after Matthew "deserted" the family. No further information has been found on him. This information has been handed down by the family and the children were placed in an orphanage. The two oldest children are found living with Julia and her husband, Michael Spellman and listed as Niece and Nephew (Julia Mary Nolan and John Peter Nolan.) The two younger children, Mary Elizabeth (Mamie) and Mathew M. Nolan were still in an orphanage according to family, but I haven't been able to pinpoint them in the census. What was strange in my research is that when I contacted a family member of the Mathew Nolan line, she never knew that we were related, but had "heard stories" about a "Nice Mr. Spellman" that helped her grandfather, John by giving him a job in his store and teaching him math. What puzzled me was that he was not "Uncle Michael". But stories may have gotten handed down wrong :) I have not been able to track Julia or Mathew in passenger lists and they may have a connection to a Miller family in Jersey City, New Jersey as I have 2 letters written in 1868 and 1869 from a "Nellie Miller" who mentions her brother, Will and her sister, Abbie. Nolan/Knowland	I am searching for the birth town of my ggrandfather, Andrew Nolan. He was born in 1830 and came to America in 1840. His parents are listed on his death certificate as John and Rose Nolan. My grandmother was his daughter and said he was from Carlow and used to receive mail from Ireland and England under the name Knowland. He married a girl from Westmeath named Ellen Connor. Andrew's wedding, death certificate and 1900 census list his name as Nolan. Ellen and Andrew married in St. Peter's Church in Jersey City, New Jersey on Aug. 1, 1852. They raised 8 daughters. Andrew died on Mar. 29, 1907 and Ellen died on May 26, 1913. They are buried in St. Peter's cemetery in Jersey City, N.J. In that same plot that was purchased by Andrew and Ellen is a baby Josephine, 4 months old (parents James and Catherine Nolan) buried on Oct. 8, 1871 and a James Nolan/ 27yrs. buried on July 16, 1864. I do not know the relationship to my ggrandparents James and Baby Josephine Nolan were. Anything familiar please let me know.	_{Priscilla Leonidas}
