INQUESTS
DIED OF WHISKY
An inquest was held on Sunday last, at the Poor House, on the body of
Thomas Burns, a pauper who went from that institution on Saturday night to
a doggery about two miles distant, to procure some tobacco. A man named
Baker, also a pauper, accompanied him. The pair purchased two quarts of
whisky, which they drank with the exception of about half a pint by five
o'clock. They then started back for the Poor House, Baker got home Sunday
morning about seven o'clock, with his fingers and toes so badly frozen
that he will lose some of them. The Warden then started a party in search
of Burns, who found him lying on the open prairie about a mile from the
Poor House. From the tracks upon the snow it was evident that he had
fallen several times, until finally he fell for the last.
The deceased was about twenty years old, and came from Carlow, Ireland,
where he has wealthy parents residing. The Jury returned a verdict in
accordance with the above facts.
