Mr. John Walshe: In another Christmas tragedy Mr.
John Walshe, aged 50, a native of Rathanna, Borris, who lived at
Somerton House, Graiguecullen, Carlow, died in Dublin’s Beaumont
Hospital on Christmas Day. Mr. Walsh had been seriously injured
while walking on the main Carlow/Wexford road on Friday, December
18. He had just attended a job interview at the Tinryland G.A.A.
clubhouse in Rathcrogue when the accident happened. Deceased had
lived in England for some years. His remains were removed on
Tuesday of last week to Rathanna Church and burial took place in
the adjoining cemetery on Wednesday, following Requiem Mass at 2
p.m. Mr. Walshe is survived by his brothers, sisters,
brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, other relatives
and friends.
Ms. Iona MacLeod, who died at Borris Lodge Nursing Home
on Christmas Day, aged 92, had been a resident of Borris Lodge for
the past six years. A native of Dublin, Iona MacLeod was county
librarian with Carlow Co. Council from September 1, 1930 until
November 28, 1970. She was the country’s longest serving librarian
and gave distinguished service. She was step-daughter of the late
P.J. Little, who was a Minister for Posts & Telegraphs. The
remains were removed from McGuills Funeral Home, Bennekerry,
Carlow to Cathedral of the Assumption on Wednesday. Following the
Funeral Mass on Thursday morning the burial took place at Dean’s
Grange Cemetery, Dublin. Ms. MacLeod is survived by her cousins,
friends and colleagues in the library service.
LATE JOHN PETERS: The death occurred
on Tuesday, December 22 at the District Hospital, Abbeyleix of John
Peters of Mooreville, Rathdowney. He had been in failing health for
some time. He was a member of a respected and well known family in the
town. John is sadly mourned by his brothers, Billy, Joe, Martin, Kerry
and Pat, his sisters, Mary and Elizabeth, his sister-in-law,
brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, many cousins, relatives and friends
and all the neighbours.
Remains reposed at O’Sullivans Funeral Home. Removal
took place to the Church of the Holy Trinity,
Rathdowney. The cortege was flanked down by guards of
honour by Rathdowney Fianna Fail Cumann and Murty
O’Donnells stewards of GAA Croke Park. The coffin was
draped with the flag and carried shoulder high into the
Church. On Christmas eve December 24, Requiem Mass was
celebrated and the burial followed to Bealady Cemetery.
Large crowds attended to pay a final tribute to John.
LATE SHIELA LYNCH: The sad news has
reached the area of the death of Mrs. Shiela Lynch
(nee) Treacy of Drumbarkey, Cootehill, Co. Cavan. The
area was deeply shocked. Shiela Treacy was born and
raised in Rathmore/Ballybrophy and was always known to
be a very quiet girl. She later married and made her
home in Cavan. She is sadly mourned by her daughter
and two sons, also her heart-broken parents, Ger and
Peg Treacy, all her sisters and brothers,
sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews,
cousins and many relatives and friends. Remains were
removed to St. Michaels Church in Cootehill on Tuesday
evening. On Wednesday, December 23 Requiem Mass was
celebrated and burial took place in the local cemetery
in Cootehill. All her family and friends travelled to
Cavan. May Shiela’s gentle soul rest in peace.
James Nolan: Sincere sympathy to the
brother and sisters and relatives of the late James
Nolan, Rathoe, and formerly from Tynock who died
recently in Rathoe. Sympathy to all concerned.

Mrs. Catherine Pender:
The death took place in St.Luke’s Hospital, Kilkenny
on Saturday October 23 of Mrs. Catherine (Kitty)
Pender (nee Byrne) of Park. Kitty, who was 75, was a
native of Grangeford, Johnstown. The family moved to
Park in 1960. In his homily, the chief celebrant Fr.
Peter Dunne PP said that Kitty’s main mission in life
was the well being of her family and passing on the
faith. She was an avid sports follower and was
interested in television coverage of all sports. Until
some years ago she attended all major GAA games. She
was predeceased by her husband Daniel in 1990 and her
brother Paddy. She is survived by her sons John
(Friarstown), George (Barrow Lodge), Oliver (Talbot
Terrace), Michael (Dublin) and Patrick (Waterford),
daughters Mary (Waterford), Nuala (Dublin) and
Bernadette (Park), brothers Tommy (Canada), Joe
(Grangeford), Larry (Ardnehue), sisters Maggie
(England), Maura (Ballycullane), grandchildren, sons
in law, daughters in law, sisters in law, nephews,
nieces, relatives and friends. Removal took place from
Carpenter Bros. Funeral Home, Barrack St. on Sunday at
7 o’c to St. Joseph’s Church, Tinryland. Burial took
place in adjoining cemetery following Concelebrated
Mass with Chief Celebrant Rev. Peter Dunne PP assisted
by Monsignor Brendan Byrne PP Tullow on Monday.
